It genuinely blew my mind when he made the connection between the Ludovico Technique and Plato’s Cave. I’m gonna have to think about that for a while.

The best interpretation of CO I've ever heard. It makes one look at the novel in a new way, revealing its depths which I failed to perceive on a previous reading.

I'm finding Dr. Sugrue's lectures highly informative. I admit I hadn't considered several of the themes explored here. Excellent lecture.

Great point about the music in the movie. At my grocery store they play 'Singin' in the rain' when they spray down the vegetables and I cant not think about ultra-violence

Society removed only half of moral free-will: it allows citizens to do or not do acts of kindness but does not allow citizens to harm eachother. This seems like a proper balance.

Real Horrorshow, Michael! Clockwork Orange is the greatest novel of the 20th Century in my opinion ("there's no accounting for taste")... thanks respect & salutations from a Joyce Junky in Britain.xx

"If we ever create a system of arrangements where people can't misuse their freedom, they're not free anymore. So the problem is, you have to take the whole package. Either you're going to be an automaton, in which case there's not really going to be any real moral good or evil, because noone's making any choices... or, you're going to be free, but you have to accept that some people are going to 'buy from the other shop.' "

Kubrick desired to muzzle his own art when it led to violence, so obviously he agreed that a compromise between art and freedom was necessary.

I wouldn’t mind a full discussion on all of Anthony burgess and kubricks stuff

It seems like Alex is a superior man of the Nietzschean ideal.
