Create shortcut to save document in two folders at once

PROBLEM: I'm not sure where to save this file or document. It seems like it would have to do with, or belong to, two or more folders. WHAT NOT TO DO: DON'T save multiple copies of the same file or document in multiple places! That's a recipe for disaster as you'll have multiple copies that can easily get out of sync with one another. WHAT TO DO: Save the file or document to one location, then use a shortcut to save to the other folder. That way, you can easily find the document or file you're looking for, in whichever folder you might think to look in! It's like out-smarting your future self :) This quick tutorial will show Windows users how to do just that.

That's a backward slash ('\') because it leans to the left (back toward the beginning of my sentence in this case). The forward slash is the other one ('/'). It's a small but important distinction since they are not interchangeable. In Linux filesystems, URLs, and pretty much everything other than DOS/Windows, the forward slash / is the proper delimiter between directories (ending with the filename of course). In Windows it's the 'backslash' \. Common parlance is to say "slash slash" when referring to the forward slash, and "whack whack" when referring to the backslash. "H T M L colon slash slash..." Vs. "whack whack server1 whack sharename". Anyone who's ever worked at a helpdesk can tell you that this is very confusing for many people. The easy way to remember which is which is that the BACK-slash is right under the BACK-space key.

Wow! This is it! I have been searching for something like this for weeks. I have thousands of files in nearly 200 hierarchical folders and its a chore editing files that pertain to multiple folders. I initially tried tags but tags only help in a search. This is my lucky day!

Wil it still work if I make a shortcut in onedrive and then want to open that document on another pc?

The shortcut appears at the bottom of the folder no matter what I name it. Is it possible to move the shortcut to be between other folders that are in that folder.

I know how to create a shortcut.
But what I expected is I want to keep two copies in two different files. And if I create the shortcut. My file will be saved in two different places.

That's my idea.

Not a forward slash, in fact a back slash. ASCll 47 forward slash, ASCll 92 backslash. The bottom of the slash is alway anchored/hinged flip it back or flip it forward.

Cool. Just what I needed to protect the dissertation I'm writing (it's writing me, actually).
Thx!

That's not a forward slash. That's a backslash

An easier way of doing this is just to right click and drag the original file into another folder and then click create shortcut
