Boot fight between an 1987 Mac and 2011 32bit-PC Netbook, and showing what sucks on todays PC´s.

@tomha49: Look at the video again. The beginning of the old Mac's boot cycle was the "beep" you hear at 0:15 (the video says "Start Booting" on it a bit early). It's all booted and ready to go at 0:31, 16 seconds. The point is newer computers are at least 200x faster yet take longer to boot, because of the software. If it was designed better, you'd see the commensurate performance increase. Video processing and internet access are faster, but app. performance sucks by comparison.

@Jaws10214 I restarted my MacBook Pro just for you. And I admit: it took 1:31.
But since you wanted the specs for comparison, here they are:

Processor - 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory - 2GB 1067 MHz DDR3

Applications - Adobe CS4 Design Premium (6.28GB alone), several media players, iLife, and a LOT of files in the images / movies / documents' folders - totaling over 190GB and leaving only around 42GB free.

Some say that DLs also have an impact on your machine - if that counts, I DL a lot too

@chipwaver Jaws it right, you're comparing two completely different animals. You've got to know what they're loading - the mac is loading the operating system and....well, not much of anything else. It's also a very fast process to translate whatever program you wanted to run straight off the bat because of how much RAM, etc... the program used. The PC on the other hand has to boot up the operating system, disk trey, antivirus software, whatever. Plus most of the programs are not written so

@chipwaver plainly anymore. A programmer is not worried about RAM and storage space on a PC anymore because we have tons of it. They write code that isn't efficient and that's why it takes the PC so much longer than the Mac to boot up.

My PC would start up a LOT faster than that Mac if I was running on that Operating System. Windows 7 simply has tons of stuff to load up - technically that's a good thing.

macs are nice but expensive. i like both macs and pcs, but i choose macs because they are cheaper. if i had alot of money to spend id buy a mac

Not really.. Not even close actually. You cant compare an ancient system to a modern.
Do you know what kind of software that loads with windows ??
Firewall, antivirus, some of the most bloated GUI ever ?
The mac loads up a very basic and non consuming OS..
The boot time cant be compared if they after a boot isnt able to perform same task.
Just like throwing a rock is faster than loading a catapult. But which would you rather use to storm a castle with ?? rock or catapult ?

@Darktheus did you know that the mac loads faster because it doesnt have to load useless programs on the background and also because the mac is more simple

@coentje114 There is no way your MacBook boots in 8 seconds. Even with the fastest SSD available, and a well optimized OS, it takes 14-16 seconds.

My MacBook Pro with SSD boots in 18secs, maybe you should replace the $200 Netbook with a computer in the same price range as the 1978 Mac ;)
