That does not really define what “enlightened self interest” is nor does it help us understand how to implement it. What are the sufficient and necessary conditions to determine when self interest is “enlightened”? The academics who live in their ivory towers— within their quasi-socialist utopias— are following their enlightened self interest. This is a system works for them— allows them to flourish... But we, the champions of a free market system, do not feel that the socialist paradigm will facilitate the flourishing of society— we want to prescribe the Capitalist way of life to humanity at large. What gives us the right to do that then? Who is ultimately right? And who’s enlightened self interest wins? We think there is an objective standard, and reject relativism. Yet, as conceived by Rand, via her rejection of a transcendent source of morality— Objectivism breaks down into relativism... If each individual decides what his or her own “enlightened” self-interest is, then how is this any different from moral relativism?
