Yeah, I know village elders Chose the Hokage in the Daimyo Palace of Land of Fire. but, The Previous Hokage can appoint his successor as the Hokage like Hashirama Chose Tobirama, then Tobirama Chose Hiruzen, Hiruzen Chose Minato because of his skills but when Minato died Hiruzen Again became the Hokage. But when Hiruzen died elders gave that offer to Jiraiya but he rejected it and told them he had a better candidate after that Tsuande became the Fifth Hokage and after Tsuande Kakashi was chosen as Hokage and when he retired he chose Naruto as the seventh Hokage and now being a manga reader Shikamaru became the Eighth Hokage because he has Experience of being with 2 Hokage naruto and Kakshi as their Advisor. and elders thought he was the best for this seat now.

Fun fact :- Hiruzen is the only one here who lived enough to known every hokage candidate from the very 1st to the very 8th hokage

Funny how Minato became hokage after his exeptional performance during 3rd ninja war (basicaly Konohas' Hero) and then Naruto, his son, became hokage after 4th ninja war also being MVP just like his dad.

I think it was mentioned Hiruzen wanted Jiraiya as the clear choice for hokage, but he declined it stating he wanted to bring back his friend Orochinaru to Konoha, as result it was Jiraiya who suggested Minato’s name for Hokage. And they agreed.
