I love this because it's cheap and effective! I know I saved a couple of broken CD/DVD players that the motor still work on. Don't throw them away. There are tons of things you can do with them, including harvesting the laser.

I have a request for this experiment. The effect is proportional to the mass of the metal. If you had small shreds of aluminum, do you see any motion at all? I get great results using a can, or a block, but nothing when using really small pieces. For example, I cut up a sheet of aluminum foil into small pieces that were about 1 mm square. I shielded the pieces as best I could from the breeze caused by my magnet on a string. There was no movement at all.
