Being able to read sheet music is a great skill that every guitar player should at least try to acquire. Reading on the guitar can be pretty difficult for some players. Many guitar players start trying to learn how to read sheet music only to get frustrated and quit. In this lesson we'll take a look at the common elements you'll come across when reading sheet music. I'll also go into some more detail about the most important ones. Hopefully, after this lesson, you'll have a basic understanding of how to read sheet music on the guitar.

Despite all of the people who say this is not for beginners, I thought this was a wonderful video. As someone who has struggled with sheet music in the past (both with vocals and the flute) I only understood very, very basic information, and I thought this filled in the gaps very nicely. And the way you explained the time signature was wonderful!

Don't listen to the complainers. Everyone needs a different style of teacher, and maybe you're not theirs. But you are fantastic regardless of what they say.

As a child I played the piano and no one ever explained the time signature. I had to hear a song before I could figure out the beat. This was a great refresher. Wish I hadn't stopped guitar back then but life got in the way. Going back to it. Thank you.

This is a really great video that explains the basics perfectly. I’ve chosen to read music at the 1st position, meaning the first 4 frets because it simplifies learning new songs that are explained like it is so commonly done on You Tube (no tabs or music, just talking). Because for me, hearing the second fattest string on the 2nd fret is much more confusing than saying B. I prefer simplified language. It takes about 2 weeks to really know the 1st position and longer to actually play intermediate songs in time, but I can do it with just a piece of sheet music in front of me…and I’ve been playing less than a year, I’m 62 and I had liver cancer surgery 4 months ago. Learn the basic notes if you want to learn more easily from you tube teachers! It’s not difficult. But if it is…don’t bother. I was one of those annoying girls who always knew the answers and just because I did, didn’t mean I wasn’t an air head!

Hi Sir, I thought that was an excellent lesson, I have been trying for a year to understand as much as I got out of that video, I took notes to so not likely to forget. I like having the pictures on the staff but you didn't just buzz through it you took your time and explained everything clearly. Great Job! I joined my churches band cause they could use an extra guitarist and I can use to play with some people, but I am trying to at least grasp the concepts of reading before I start, and I grasped a lot from that video, a long ways to go but at least I got some basics in my head now.

Thank you so much! I just got hired into a band as a lead guitar player and the first thing they asked me can I read sheet music. I told them I can figure out what note it is but I am really slow at it. So they gave me the timing and the key its in and told me to listen to them and just make up a lead. That I can do, but I have the summer to learn to actually read music and play it on the guitar. At least I know where all the notes are on the guitar, so that is half the battle. This lesson was extremely helpful to me. Thank you!
