I love reality tv as a genre. Most of the things you list as fake I usually just consider (overly) produced. The vast majority of these shows are taking real people and just putting them in contrived situations, which leads to mostly real output.

I’ve seen on shows like Top Chef where the cheftestant isn’t feeling it or isn’t adapting to the competition format. But of course there it’s more obvious because they don’t cast bad chefs, and here they are not making good food. The Mole it’s a bit different though because the only person that can really eliminate you, is you. So I’m guessing that “fake it until you make it” is the best way to go there, as evidenced by Dennis Rodman in season 4.

Big Brother is the perfect example of being real and fake at the same time. If you watch the edited shows that air on CBS, those are episodes that production has created a story that they want the audience to follow. If you watch the live feeds, the story is completely different. Even listening to the diary rooms, those all sound prompted to move the story along.

My problem with watching the mole was that the format was ineffective with some very easy ways to play the system.
If people think that you are the mole when you aren't, they will vote for you and they will be at higher risk of going home. This would mean that sabotaging missions even when you are not the mole would be a viable strategy as it would ensure long term longevity in the game.
Another part of the show I don't understand is that the mole has no objective: From what we hear they don't get prize money no matter how much they sabotage the missions, granted their identity remains a mystery to the audience.
Overall, it was quite difficult to get behind the premise of the show as it seems the optimal solution would be everyone sabotaging missions to survive another round.
It seems like for it to make sense we need to be told more of whats going on.
