Sir we also use percentage differential protection in transformer protection scheme. So what is the difference between differential and percentage differential protection? which one should be prefer for transformer protection.

Differential Relay Transformer protection:
For internal fault protection of transformer ratings of 5MVA and above (We use both DR and Buchholz relay)
Below 5MVA transformer we only use Buchholz relay.

Incase internal fault occurs in the transformer but not in the oil such as faults in the transformer bushings then Buchholz relay will fail to work so inorder to protect against such internal faults we use differential protection.
Differential relay has very less response time as compared to Buchholz relay.
Differential relay only operates in a zone of protection and cannot operate in outaide the zone of protection.
It is a specialize mode of protection and can also be use in generators and motors.
