This 3D animation shows how a Buchholz relay works. The 3D animation explains clearly each of the three main faults a transformer is likely to have and how the Buchholz relay triggers either an alarm and/or shutdown depending upon the severity of the fault.

We discuss the Buchholz relay’s main components and how they protect the electrical transformer. Compared to gas actuated relays, a Buchholz relay has three functions, but a gas actuated relay has only two.
Buchholz relays are only fitted on liquid insulated electrical transformers and are designed to operate with the following electrical faults:
Fault 1
Large Electrical Fault
Fast and Large Amount of Gas Accumulation
Result: Transformer Alarms and Trips (shutdown)
Fault 2
Minor Electrical Fault
Slow Gas Accumulation
Result: Transformer Alarms
Fault 3
Low Insulating Liquid Level
Insulating Liquid Level Drops
Result: Transformer Alarms and Trips
