To perform this test leave the cartridge / headshell in place but remove the stylus. Next, move the counterweight on the rear of the tonearm until the arm is perfectly balanced and floating. This means the arm wand (the chrome part) is flat parallel with the surface of the turntable, its neither pointing upwards or down and its not resting on the arm rest or the arm lift mechanism. Give the headshell / cartridge a gentle tap from the side and it should move freely to the centrestop and bounce back again, at least once.
