This stuff can be SO overwhelming, that’s why we need to only ask ourselves two questions!

When "letting go" of sentimental items like kids' drawings, old cards, etc. I take a picture of it so I still have a piece of it, but I don't have the store the actual item. It makes it easier for my heart. ♥

I saved one bear from my childhood. It's on my daughter's bed and she takes care of it. When she moves out in a decade, I'll still keep it and take care of it. Maybe one of my grandkids can love it too. Or maybe not, that's up to them. You don't have to get rid of everything to live a highly simplified life.

We had such a different experience after our parents were gone. Our dad had been gone 10 years before we lost our mom, and my adult siblings and I spent many days going through the house to prepare it for an estate sale. That sounds fancy but it wasn’t, it was just much more organized yard sale. At first we went through to find the things that we wanted to keep. It was healing, it was a time of laughter and tears, and we did either donate or even trash some things before taking what we wanted and selling the rest. We did not find it overwhelming and what we were able to do was walk through our childhood and even our parents childhoods. I wouldn’t trade it for the world and I’m so glad they kept what they kept. But of course everyone should do what they are comfortable with. I also just wish I could get behind the name of this… I just hate the term death cleaning lol!

We really have to be honest with ourselves! Admitting that the season is over is so healthy!

I agree about taking a picture. That is a way to save your memories.

I'm surprised you hadn't decluttered it yet, but at the same time I'm not. It's so hard to get rid of what we once treasured as a child for many years. Great little discussion on how we can go through our things with logic.

Stuffed animals can still get dusty or possibly even mildewy when stored away. I just threw out two bins of them and am only keeping the handful of sentimental for now.

My 2 children had loads of stuffed toys and played games and made up stories with them for hours on end.
Once they grew up I put them all in a black sack in the attic because I thought the kids would want them in the future.
When I was sorting the attic I decided that since they were the kids toys they should decide what to do with them.
They had a wonderful time (in their 20's) looking through all the toys and reminiscing and then they let them ALL go.I was actually surprised how easy it was for them.
It was ME that was sentimental not the kids!!!

My siblings and I needed to move from our childhood home to a group home when I was 17 and my sibs were 16 & 12 (long, sad story). My sister has one handkerchief and I have a bag of seashells and that's all that we have had from our childhoods since 1975. However, I'm living proof that you can keep the memory of things, even if you haven't seen those things in nearly 50 years! I remember stuffed animals and photos and knickknacks from our room and Barbies, books and Christmas ornaments, etc, etc even though I haven't owned or seen those the things for many decades!

I KNOW that my story is unusual! I wonder if perhaps that you are unusual since your parents still live in your childhood home and still have most/all of your belongings? I think that maybe you are unusual - but I"m not sure. I'm now 64, so most of my friends and I have lost both parents and our childhood homes have long been sold. Are you unusual among your friends in your age group? (I hope that you can hear my tone and I mean this in the kindest way! Just truly curious!)

Yes It’s healthy to admit the season is over.

But still… I‘m keeping Pupsy and Candide in a box in my wardrobe… 🐰🐰
If something happens to me, I want to be burried with them (Sue me!)… 😁

Omg I pay $200 a month to keep my animals in air conditioned storage, I could never throw them out. ❤

What do you do for photos of events and family? Do you keep a certain amount each month?

Clutter causes stress when I try to figure out what should stay and what can go.

When I come across things from my childhood, my kids always want them. 🤷‍♀️ Any tips on navigating this?

You’re helping me, not only in how to minimize, but why. Cherish the past, but look forward. And, in front of me, I have a lot of decluttering to do! Blessings!
