When my dad passed last year it was a sad awakening of real important loss. I started cleaning out and giving away things to not burden my son with having to do it. The process of going through someone’s things was cathartic but also felt invasive.

I am on Hospice care right now. When I watched this show I cried my eyes out. One reason was because I wish my Sister would have had the opportunity to have had this experience when she was sick. I’m doing this now on my own as far as giving things to people that I want to have my things. Nobody will be stressed about doing this when I go.

I’m Swedish (American) and I’m 57 years old. Already going thru things to either hand down to my adult kids or donate. Not trying to keep everything in my golden years !

We can also start in the good ol USA by stop using euphemisms for death like passed, passing away, transitioning, and all the other non-death words like that. You die. We die. They are dead. They have died. I hate it. It’s nothing to be afraid of. How you may die, sure. The state of being dead, no. After my dad died, my sister read his obit to me as a proof and I said, he didn’t pass away, he died. (I was there just minutes after, she was not despite me driving from two hours away at 2 in the morning to get my mom to him and her living right in town because she didn’t hear her phone the 20 times I called). The New York Times only uses died in their obits. She wouldn’t budge and I lost the discussion. As soon as they were teens I started talking to my kids about death and dying as a fact of life esp when I and my siblings really had to step up the elder care and during my dads final illness. Demystify it. Call it what it is. Everyone will be so much better off.
