Ah, the rotary Mazda. The only ever Japan Le Mans winner where in comparison, all the money in the world spent, , never did Toyota ever win that legendary race.

My dad I had an RX3, and that car was FUN to drive. Loved the way the engine revved and pulled. However, the apex seals were in two pieces - with a triangular piece of the end the second piece. One of the triangular pieces fell out and seized between the main part of an apex seal and the housing. I rebuilt it which was fun, but the engine did not have a lot of miles on it at the time and it obviously was not a reliable design. FUN though when running.

Well, I gotta say rotary engine would be very reliable *ONLY IF* you mantain it well since brand new. I have 2010 Mazda RX-8 and it has been used for daily driving. Not very economical but never left me stranded.

I remember when I first heard about the rotary engine. I was about 8 and Phil Garner (actor and renowned car guy) talked about the Mazda. I asked my father and he explained about Wankel engines. This brought back a lot of good memories.

I drove a used RX2 sedan for a few yrs and loved it. Not great MPG. It chugged at idle but the faster you went, the smoother it ran. My favorite car. Very quick too!!!

I head from a rotary engine expert that you have to rev up your rotary engine to high rpm when your drive it to make it last longer. His explanation was that when you don't go high enough rpm it will build carbon buildup that damages the apex seals.
