The Silent Rise of ASEAN as a Global Superpower

While some of the most powerful countries in the world continue to be involved in war, recession, and high inflation, there is a band of countries in Asia that’s separating themselves from everyone else.

ASEAN, or the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, is a regional organization located in Southeast Asia composed of ten member states. Its mission is to promote peace, stability, and economic cooperation among its member countries.

The organization has been experiencing a rise to prominence thanks to its net economic growth, regional integration, geopolitical significance, diplomatic platform, and regional cooperation on various challenges. This just shows that together, the ten countries of ASEAN form an economic powerhouse. The region is said to be one of the world’s fastest-growing markets, however, that growth remains somewhat unknown to the rest of the global community.

ASEAN has been showing a remarkable rise in recent years, but this climb up is something that has been very silent. Today, we stray away from the loud stories of success and quietly observe the ascent to the top of a region down south.

The interesting thing about us Asean is that we speak different language, have different form of government (democracy, communism, monarchy etc.), different religion (Christianity, Buddhism, Islam etc.) Yet united as one.
We trashtalk each other in the internet yet we are proud of each other in the world stage.

Like Kishore said: ASEAN is the most unbelievable thing you can see humans can achieve. You see, every nation is very different in religion and language yet they are thriving and speak no violence as solution.

I believe in ASEAN's progress. We generally have no ill will towards each other, despite our differences in culture and upbringing... must be the lack of significant historical grievances between each nation is what makes us easy to ally with each other.

There's no reason to pour blood of the same kin, even if we speak different languages.

Southeast Asians are not dumb, we know that there is strength in unity and to stand on the world stage we have to work together. If we don't unite and bring peace and prosperity to the region, we are the ones that lose. In my experience SEA nations have a very strong sense of kinship for each other no matter the differences. Some of my closest and best friends in my own personal circles are from fellow ASEAN countries. Love from Singapore to all my ASEAN brothers and sisters and to everyone in the world. World Peace. 🌱

I met the founder of ASEAN, Dr. Thanat Khoman in the early 1990s, interestingly, he was in his 80s years of age. He was very sharp, candid, well-spoken plus no-fear attitudes. He was the ambassadors in many countries with PhD in law from Paris. He married the Thai-Singaporean lady. He make friends with both the west and the communists in those tines with mutual respect. It is no surprise that why AEAN is aiming for building mutual respect within and outside the group.

I just finished studying the ASEAN as an offered General Elective course (The Filipino and the ASEAN) from the Department of Political Science in my college. It's very interesting to learn about, and watching the video as well as reading the comments here especially the praise for the non-interference policy and the "unity in diversity" culture of ASEAN member states makes me more appreciative of our organization and more curious to research about it. I hope that in the coming years, ASEAN will continue to stabilize and prosper with its rising potential 🇵🇭❣️

The only "elephant in the room" in ASEAN is Myanmar. The atrocities committed by the millitary junta against its own people going on unabated there is partly as a consequence of ASEAN's policy of "non-interference over the internal affairs of its members!" Sad but true.

As a South East Asian, based on my experience, we really like each other despite differences in terms of language and religion. Maybe it's because we get oppressed by the corrupted governments where we share the similar fate. I highly believe that we will rise for sure if we don't have corrupted leaders

You can see this level of unity in online games, my wife and I love playing online games, although we don't play the same game most of the time.. Most of her friends are from Malaysia, they have an all-women guild where the majority of members are from Malaysia, Indonesia, and Philippines. My guild on the other hand have a very strong alliance with Indonesian and Vietnamese players. We trash talk almost all of the time, have internal conflicts here and there, even go to war against one another, but when the time comes to unite we are 100% united. This always happens when players from outside SEA server tries to invade.

Im thai, I believe one of the reason for such success is that we were taught to love our neighbouring countries in school. I grew up being taught to respect other fellow Asean contries and to be proud of their archievements.

Unity not only as a face on TV, but also in the people as well.

Dont put too much burden in ASEAN. Except what happen in Myanmar, we love the peace we have build for decades here in the region. And by the way Happy birthday ASEAN, may we prosper as a family centuries to come... ❤❤❤
