The actual reason is that cats freak out when you place a cucumber behind them is that they believe that the shape of the cucumber in their peripheral vision is a snake sneaking up on them which triggers an instinctual flight response.

I saw a street cats which kept on running away from me as I was walking and the cat thought I was going after it, it even went past me and started running away. As I got to a car, that same cat was under it and saw me as it was about to walk out. There was a bin to the other side of the cat and it jumped and got scared of it

Yup it thinks it snuck up on them lol Because the cats senses are some of the most elite of all animals and they are naturally always on alarm for predators.

This is actually a bad idea if you love your feline companion. You are scaring the hell out of them at one of their most trusted spots, right where you feed them. This can lead to behavioral/trust issues. Remember, your cats trust you and when you violate that trust for a laugh, you can damage your relationship with your friend.

Lack of pressence... They are very sensitive but the lack of pressencs makes them surprised of the cucumber.
