How empowering women and girls can help stop global warming | Katharine Wilkinson

If we really want to address climate change, we need to make gender equity a reality, says writer and environmentalist Katharine Wilkinson. As part of Project Drawdown, Wilkinson has helped scour humanity's wisdom for solutions to draw down heat-trapping, climate-changing emissions: obvious things like renewable energy and sustainable diets and not so obvious ones, like the education and empowerment of women. In this informative, bold talk, she shares three key ways that equity for women and girls can help stop global warming. "Drawing down emissions depends on rising up," Wilkinson says.

I'll save your time.
Educate women in poor countries to plan their family --> Reduce population --> Reduce global warming.

why not educate everyone on climate change and empower everybody women say they want equality but we have to treat them differently?

The idea that better farming on poor countries is going to equal to more and better forests is wild... I have the feeling it is the other way around: if you level the floor then the small ones are more likely to mimic the predatory ways of the big ones, because at the end of the day we all want the same: MORE MONEY. So, yes, ripple effect, but the bad kind of ripple effect.

Why is it everything she said focused on poor countries? Hasn't she realized that rich countries are the ones polluting the most?? Yes, women in rich countries are having less babies and yet they are still polluting a lot more than women in poor countries: women in poor countries don't use AC, women in poor countries don't dispose their garments as often as the ones in rich countries do, women in poor countries aren't consuming as much processed food (and consequently plastic) as women in rich countries... I mean, I could probably go all day writing reasons why her whole analysis is biased and wrong.

Gender equality is just one aspect of the Project Drawdown. It's completely okay for them to break down the 80 solutions and talk in different forums so that they can strike the chords with different set of audiences. I think Project Drawdown is absolutely great and one that deserve EVERYONE to pay attention. They don't claim to be 100% correct, please look at their data, scrutinise and ask them to improve.

I believe every kid should read this book before completing high school. I just ordered one to donate to my alma mater's library! Recommend all of you guys to do so as well!

Loved the talk. Bewildered by many of the comments.

looking at the comments is an example already of why educating women and girls is needed in helping to stop global warming. Just a bunch of close-minded men in the comments not seeing the bigger picture as always and maybe not even watching the whole video. This video brought be to tears towards the end and my class to an applause. inspired me to do something good in my community and for the environment. Beautiful and educational! :)

You mean more than we already do? The only countries where they don't do it are underdeveloped nations, like in Africa, most of the Middle east and other muslim countries.

Her number on the amount of unwanted pregnancies in the US is wrong, it's not 45/100 but rather 45/1000. I think it still should be combatted, but it isn't as big of a deal as she's saying it is.

Come on people it's 2019.
I think the more serious is problem is unequal distribution of wealth then gender inequality .

This talk was necessary, as it was not obvious why these factors were in the top 5 of the 100 measures listed by the project Drawdown. It is strategic to focus on women and girls, for many goood reasons. I was agreeably surprised by the "spiritual" aspects you named at the beginning of your talk: I find that authentic/courageous. By "spirituality" (not religion), I mean referring to a feeling of connection to life and others. Though we could translate that to empathy and choosing to belong to the world (co-responsibility).

Her 3 points were actually pretty good. To bad they came wrapped in a condescending, feminist accusation. If you really want us to fight climate change as a united front, you will need to do better.

She uses logical fallacy to connect the impact and importance of global warming with gender inequality, making it look like gender equality is as impactful.

This is the most "California bubble" talk that I may have ever seen. Not everyone thinks like you.

She's wonderful! Very interesting position, I agree with it. Men say there's no sexism and feminism is useless, but gender inequality causes really essential problems, and I talk not only about global warming and environment. If humanity doesn't listen to women, it will lose sharp brains, new ideas and new solutions. Completely unreasonable. And I can't understand why there's so many dislikes (ok, I know, it's because she dared to touch on a question of gender equity...)

Fighting climate change is important. Empowering women is important. The suggestion that there’s any connection between the two strikes me as really fuzzy. Well, beyond that, statistically speaking, a lot of people concerned with one are probably also concerned with the other.

I geniuely think that Ms Wilkinson talks about climate change to have more publicity.
Women's problems (in third world) she mentioned are real, solutions proposed by her aren't bad, but connecting them with climate change is a stretch.
I gave this video hand up, because she talks about important problems, and this video has too many dislikes.
