AquaBrick vs WaterBrick. Which is the best for portable, long-term water storage?

Water storage, purification, and transportation should be one of your top considerations in your preparation plan. Don't neglect this critical component of survival. In this episode, Rusty lays out what you should consider when choosing a portable, long-term water storage solution. The most popular options are then compared using portability, usability, and durability as the judgment criteria.

Unless you’re a competitive World’s Strongest Man participant, you’re probably not going to pick up and toss your 450lb water tank into the back of the car when you need to bug out or evacuate. If durability and usability are important to you, throwing some cases of bottled water or refilled milk jugs in the trunk isn’t a great plan either. This is the space a “brick” fills — medium capacity water storage that is easily portable and holds up to abuse in a bug-out OR bug in an emergency.

We perform a head-to-head with the two best-known players on the market (AquaBrick and WaterBrick) to see which is the best. Enjoy the money we saved you by doing the product torture tests on your behalf.

Heads up for cleaning these:

Use denture cleaner tablets. Fill with hot water (preferable) and plop a couple in. Let set overnight and then wash out and air dry. They’re food safe. Easy peasy.

I use them on hard to clean water bladders like MSR, Camelbak, Hydrapak, etc. They’re the same stuff as what Camelbak (Cleaning Tablets) charges way more for.

If you do this regularly you don’t even have to scrub or do anything else.

Glad I watched this before I bought the Waterbrick. Definitely sold me on the Aquabrick; it doesn't seem like stacks as nice as the Waterbrick, but it'll certainly last longer if that fall is all that was needed to crack it.

I spend 2-3 months a year adventure traveling and overlanding; living out of my truck between backpacking, MTB and climbing destinations. I’ve used about every water container out there, found AquaBrick 5-6 yrs ago and have not used anything since. They are not perfect, but IMO the best option out there for the money if you are using them in an outdoor travel lifestyle. The 3 gal size is perfect for ease of handling and storing. Start hauling flimsy 5-6 gal jugs (41-48 lbs) hundreds of yards back and forth to a fill source, you will appreciate the 3 gal w/molded in handles. I nest these together upright (the molding interlocks) and throw a lightweight ratchet strap around them (snug tight) and they sit nice and secure in the back of the truck and they travel real nice across the roughest terrain. I have yet to have one fail, but have gone through a few of the spigots. I don’t use for long term storage, so can’t vouch for their chops in that regard. I also have never had any cleaning concerns. I only put water in them, rotate use while traveling so they never get funky, and when trip is over, they get thoroughly shaken with soapy water, we’ll rinsed and dried before being put away. I have a 1 acre pond in my front yard to filter from if I ever need H2O in an emergency.

I did not expect you to cut your containers in half (!) or to go to the extent that you did beyond the initial table comparisons, for that matter. Excellent, informative video, great presentation of useful information. Thanks for putting this together and sharing it.

Tip: One of those dryer vent brushes with a somewhat conical shape and a long flexible handle that was dedicated to only being used to clean the Aqua Brick might work well for that purpose because the metal handle is flexible and should be long enough to be threaded all the way into the channel created by the integrated handles of the container. The longer, semi-round dryer vent brush that usually comes as part of a two piece kit could help clean the rest of it - kind of like giant bottle brushes. 🙂

Thank you for your objective review of these critical products from a functional perspective. I loved the torture tests. Only missing comparison was the 50 BMG penetration test!

I have used those plastic 1/4 turn valves for years. Drill a hole where you want it and use the bulkhead nut and washer and presto you have a valve close to the bottom.

1 year later, Oct 2021, the cost of the AB is about $11.25 per gallon and the coupon code still worked.

You nailed all the complaints I have for the water brick. I purchase 6 of them and realized that I was not a fan of the design, just as you described. Seems aqua brick might be a better solution, so will check it out. Thanks!

Please help me Hi I have 5 gallon collapsible polypropylene food grade water storage containers. And I have the Aquamira 2 part Chlorine Dioxide treatment.
I'll be using city water from the tap. I have to treat it because in our area it's very contaminated. How do I treat the water prep the gallon containers the right way?
I read the polypropylene breaks down and can't handle chlorine or Bleach?
Can I still use these containers with this aquamira treatment? Will it poison us? Or make the containers leach chemicals?
Also let's say it can be used how do I start?
Wash each container soap and water rinse. Do I splash each container with Bleach? Then add the tap water then add the drops of treatment? Do i have to boil tge water first or can it go straight from the tap? Or should i just buy distilled water instead? Then treat it with drops? The goal is for long term storage for hopefully 2-3 + years if possible. Ill be doing multiple containers want to do it right. Thanks

You mentioned that the aqua brick suggested stacking was 4 high. How high can the water bricks stack? I'm thinking that's why they used a firmer plastic and added the pillers inside. This would indeed make it more brittle but perhaps stacking the water brick 10 high is no issue compared too the aqua brick. Honestly I'm not sure witch one I'm going to get yet. Lots of valid points on the video. I also think price would be important to mention in the video. Though they are simular in price you can only buy the aqua brick in a 6 pack or less and at 3 gallons each that's only 18 gallons whereas the water brick you get a 10 pack and at 3.5 gallons each that's 35 gallons of water basically twice as much for the same price as your pack of 6 aqua bricks. Thus you would need to buy two 6 packs of aqua bricks to match one 10 pack of water brick storage doubling your initial investment cost.

The Aqua brick probably won cause plastics that have adatives to make them translucent tend to be more brittle over opaque plastics and the brittleness will only get worse overtime on any plastic that is even only semi translucent. If you compare the plastics in the 2 I'll bet you find the Aquabrick is a bit more flexable and thats actually a good thing. Its kinda the same reason steel is better than Aluminum. Steel can take some deformation and spring back more so than aluminium.
