AP Precalculus Section 1.1 Example: Increasing Function from a Table

Random AP Precalculus Problems (I found on the Internet). These are not official AP Collegeboard examples, but they will definitely get the job done!

To find the intervals where a function is increasing using a table of x and y values, follow these steps:

1. Arrange the table in ascending order of x-values.
2. Examine the y-values to identify any trends.
3. Look for consecutive y-values where each subsequent y-value is greater than the previous one. These are the intervals where the function is increasing.
4. Note down the corresponding x-values to determine the intervals on the x-axis.

For example, if you have a table like this:

| x | y |
|-------|-------|
| 1 | 2 |
| 2 | 5 |
| 3 | 8 |
| 4 | 8 |
| 5 | 9 |

You can see that as x increases from 1 to 3, y increases from 2 to 8, and from 4 to 5, y remains the same at 8. Therefore, the intervals where the function is increasing are [1, 3] and [4, 5].
