SELMA is the story of a movement. The film chronicles the tumultuous three-month period in 1965, when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led a dangerous campaign to secure equal voting rights in the face of violent opposition. The epic march from Selma to Montgomery culminated in President Johnson (Tom Wilkinson) signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965, one of the most significant victories for the civil rights movement. Director Ava DuVernay’s SELMA tells the real story of how the revered leader and visionary Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (David Oyelowo) and his brothers and sisters in the movement prompted change that forever altered history.

Me and my grandmother saw this in theaters and i remember her holding my arm crying at the church scene in the beggining. I hadnt realized she was living in the town at the same time it happened and it brought her back to that day. That fall we went to selma amd birmingham and it was crazy the amount of history happened. Sadly selma was hit by a tornado yesterday. Me and my grandmother are planning on going to help with relief soon. This movie really heped me understand so much if what my grandmother lived through from the march to the actual speeches. RIP Dr.King Jr.

I didn't know this about black history until me and my family moved down south to Alabama. I watched this movie.

Was this ever out in the theaters? It looks amazing. I'm glad to see Oprah is also behind this and is in it.
The scary thing is, where I live in Arizona, the local police are exactly like this, weaponized and militarized to the hilt. Most do not seem to realize this is the reality, all across our country.
