The Xbox Series S and X consoles arrived in late 2020 mass anticipation and a dream of next-level performance in a new generation. Microsoft promised that we would feel the difference of this new console set with super fast response and tactile immersive experiences not possible on older hardware. The Xbox Series X is impressive on paper, but in practice over the first year of the new console, it has been underwhelming in performance, promises and comparisons to the much larger PS5. Microsoft’s Advanced Technology Group has been working all year to get the potential realized on the new consoles, and with this latest update we will finally see how the Xbox Series X and even the S, can outperform the competition by giving us a truly next generation experience on the Xbox platform!

The software is the disappointment not the hardware. All we have ever heard from developers in the past is that consoles have held them back from creating there vision. Series X ps5 are more then capable so no more excuses.

This Upgrade is for the Dev Kit and for Developers to get the most out of the Xbox Series S and X. RDNA 2 is on the way, we are finally walking out of Cross-Generation Games on Xbox Series S and X!

I just hope 3rd party developers begin to do a better job of optimizing games for the Seeies S especially.

Doom Eternal was a great example of what is to come with VRS in the future. It's only getting better. I just hope third party takes full advantage of these features and not just first party.

If this means the Series S will be more likely to get RT features, or even always come with a 60/120FPS mode then I'm very happy about this. It's clear that current games are not making the most of next-gen console features, which means that devs are just relying on the extra horsepower of the Series X/ PS5. Only when games are built for next gen will we see true leaps in graphical quality that will also greatly benefit both Series S and mid-range GPUs

Honestly, as a xbox fan, all of this seems just marketing pretty words. We've been hearing this for a long time, and although the performance gap vs playstation is practically closed, I'm a little skeptical about all these features will be fully utilized and if they will properly show out of the world advancements. Of course, as every console gen the games tend to get better and better as the years go by, this gen won't be any different. But I don't think we will see either PS5 or Series X with a noticeable advantage vs the other.

Colt Eastwood is the ultimate Xbox hype man! Microsoft needs to put him on the PR payroll, if he isn’t already. #PayTheMan

It typically takes two years before you start seeing games that really define and take advantage of the strengths a new system provides.

As an older system has a defined user base as a new system will not. Companies are not trying to lose money from the last generation owners.

So games will always have parity with the last generation. Like madden 22 for the Xbox vs the series x. There’s very little difference between the two gameplay wise.

As there are let’s 40 million Xbox’s in comparison to 5 million Xbox series x and s currently. Not concrete numbers but just used as an example.

There’s a vested interest in getting revenue from those 40million Xbox one owners before they migrate over to the new system.

So it’s a delicate balance.

I’ve had a Series X since April of last year. So the other day, I booted up my Xbox one that’s collecting dust && wow the load/download times are day && night difference. The quick resume feature is also another nice advantage.

Thanks Colt...glad you're around to explain all this. Can't wait to get these true next gen games. Just hope publisher's will allow the development time to implement these features. Looking at you EA!!!

My honest opinion it’s grate that there is new features coming to Xbox. There should not be games that run at 30fps minimum 60fps and minimum 120 for shooters. I know developers want to deliver eye candy games and if it runs at a low frames it’s not enjoyable to play. I’ll take more frames any day over fidelity of the game

A Gears 5 update with all these UE5 features would be insane, that will give them more time to work in Gears 6 as a native UE5 title!

I’m glad you showed the video overlays of how each new function actually works while also explaining it, I have always wondered what exactly these new things do and how they do it.

I don’t think the Xbox series X has been underwhelming compared to the PS5. In fact, I think it’s been better, but that’s my opinion.

Actually I'm more interested in FSR 2.0 being implemented in consoles than VRS. FSR can make 30 FPS quality mode a thing of the past. We should have 4K 120p Performance and 4K 60p quality modes already.

I mean, a few things I noticed instantly with this new system of the Xbox, is the lightning fast speed. Even with load times, download times, installation. I mean everything. On top of that, the amount of SSD space upfront was pretty impressive for both of the S and the X considering the price ranges.

These new features are exciting and great, but Microsoft need to get the consoles out and for them to be readily available. I own a Series S with a 4TB Hard drive and the 1TB SSD drive and I do love it, but my giant 4K TV would rather have Series X. Supply chains are still hit hard here in Western North Carolina, USA. It is nearly impossible to even get a Series S and I've never seen Series X or Ps5/Ps5 Digital Edition in stores. I'm not paying out the nose to a scalper either.

VRS + DRS + DirectML (DLSS) = Chefs kiss. That's the magic trifecta for game rendering. FSR is ok for now even though it's software based, but isn't as good as DLSS and will need to be moved over to DirectML hardware based rendering.
