It’s always tricky posting Thanksgiving side dish recipes, since most families tend to gravitate toward the familiar and comforting, verses the new and interesting. This is especially true for a side dish like green bean casserole, which is why I decided to post this. It’s familiar, comforting, new, and interesting, so we have everything covered. Enjoy!

Every so often the stars align and you have every ingredient. Today was that magical day, and this is in my oven right now.

I’ve got some asparagus in the fridge that’s begging to be cooked with this recipe. I am after all the Dwight Schrute of what veggie to substitute.

Happy to report back, I made this with asparagus and it was a big hit. 10/10

Fun Fact: "Green Beans Au Gratin" is French for "proof that adding enough cheese and butter to anything will make it delicious"

I am happy to report that these green beans gave new meaning to our Thanksgiving dinner!! I mean, WOW!!! We used the sharp cheddar in pace of the fancy cheese, because of the budget... I am even willing to go out on a limb and rave about the next day factor! When we dug into these as leftovers, they instantly became the star! 5 stars from our house!!

12:45a & I'm up throwing Chef John a comment/compliment/thank you!?

Keeping it a secret, I made this for Thanksgiving Dinner & my family LOVED IT! No condensed soup. No French fried onions. No extra mushrooms. Nothing to even SUGGEST that this was "the 'ol stand-by". Seeing how it still (kinda) looked like that other dish, I really did fool everyone but, it was MUCH to their delight.

Thanks for all you do. I love your style of presentation, your voice & how you use it, & of course, all the dishes & other cooking knowledge you impart to us.

Here's to hoping you had a wonderful & Happy Thanksgiving. God Bless.

That moment you realize you and Chef John trim green beans the same way and the pride keeps you smiling for minutes!

Chef John, I love you. I had a shite day and just listening to you describe cooking a beautiful dish, even if I have no intention of replicating it (which in this case I do) soothes my soul. Thank you from the bottom of my oven dish.

Hello Chef John from one of your new neighbors on Mill Šta. Rd.
Thank you for this easy easy recipe for green beans. I will be making it for TG tomorrow. Best of luck with Kismet. I visited Rinni there for years. The love that built that house and property was immense. And it’s for you now: Kismet!!

chef john, you're now one of my favorite chefs to watch! i've been showing your recipes to my friends and they all think they look amazing! and i love the way you cook, and your commentary. your vocal cadence is soothing to listen to, and you kinda sound like kermit the frog, which is a very good thing. keep cooking!!!

It was my first time hosting a dinner party for my partner's work friends. I made this along side your Cajun Chicken Wing recipe. I felt like a superstar! Everyone was floored that the food was made right in my kitchen. Also, the buttered breadcumbs are the showstopper of this dish.
