Plane ramming often gets you nasty notes online (especially in Battlefield V), but hey, it worked in World War II. There are many accounts of ramming in wartime, dating back to the start of flight. Interestingly, Russia was well-known for the tactic early in WW2, due to the technology gap in aviation.

If I remember right, England used this tactic when fighting off German attacks over England. The British pilots could parachute and just jump into a new plane. If a German pilot did the same, they would find themselves behind enemy lines alone, on foot, and captured.

The Japanese were definitly screaming out "THATS FAIL RP" as they see an American fighter plane ramming other planes.

You missed one small detail: In video games, the tactic is most commonly employed against you, by your own teammates.

Soviet Union took the ramming a step further during WWII. Although it was still a last ace up the sleeve, a lot of effort was put into developing ramming attack tactics that allowed the pilot to survive the attack.. and quite often even make it back to base. Such as using the propeller to cut through the enemy tail controls or cutting through an enemy with one’s own wing (and hopefully having enough of it left afterwards to make it back to base - there were cases of it).

The absolute balls of steel it took to pull such trick off were often praised in propaganda - “Ramming is a hero’s weapon!”.

the german ace Heinrich Erler slammed his Me 262 into an enemy bomber. His last words were "I'm out of ammunition. I'm ramming now. Goodbye, see you in Valhalla".

The Germans also used this to. During 1945 the bf109s were stripped down from there armor and guns (besides a single machine gun) and were told to ram the bombers. This ultimately failed with only 7-17 bombers being taken down. And many German pilot died. This battle was only for a last attempt as it was 1945.

Sodorkommando "Elbe" was a german operation of kamikaze attacks in ww2. A very interesting piece of ww2 history. It proved to be less effective than simply training pilots, but it was still deadly to the allies.

Additionally, while the Allies did indeed conduct suicidal airplane attacks, the decision to ram a plane into a target was (almost) always made by the pilots own choice in the heat of the moment, whereas the axis top brass would set up Kamikaze task forces (though to be fair these were mostly made of volunteers too). In the Axis task forces the expectation was that the pilots would not return.

To me this showcases the increasing desperation of the Axis forces at the end of ww2 and the privilege the Allies had as they rarely if ever needed to implement such tactics organizationally.
