I started off in the server/sys admin environment with Security+ and Windows Server and did that for 7 years. I then spent a year on the networking side and got CCNA routing and switching. I love both and love environments in which I have to do both. I was in the military turned IT private contractor mainly working in the Middle East on US bases in the Middle East. Many times, I am required to do both and this how you build the orchestra within you. I am working on getting CEH by summer 2019, and then CISSP by Dec 2019. I want to enter 2020 finished with obtaining more certifications as I will be covered under DoD 8507 IAT policies. Spend time in your career doing sys admin/server, and another part doing network. You will be happy down the road that you can do it all, but take time to develop so that you are deeply proficient and not just a basic jack-of-all-trades. Great videos, very motivating.

Myself, I’m at the crossroads trying to decide my path. Love networking, love systems, ESXI is dead sexy....I love it all. 90% of my Xmas list is going to building myself a home lab to incorporate bits an pieces of all those environments. Love the video....Makes me realize I’m not the only one out there struggling to define my IT life, and that there’s nothing wrong with that. #LabLife

Great video! I was always a Cisco network guy for years but had the opportunity to move into the VoIP admin position at my work. After two years I'm still learning about the Call Manager world but so far it has been very interesting. We are in the process of switching from PRI's to SIP for our external voice connection and that has been pretty fun.

You are great man, you summarize the entire process of almost every individual who traveled the systems path. I started with helpdesk just like you, then moved to "datacenter admin" and still unable to touch deep into any IOS configuration so I started CCNA and placed myself into a real ISP engineer environment. That was the start of everything. Right now I do the EDGE part of a big company in US but..guess what, I live in Argentina!. I work almost 80% Juniper devices and about to finish my CCDA after CCNA-CCNP. It´s an amazing amazing world, never get bored, pay is good so, what else can I say, one of the most wonderful decision in my life was to say: let´s get into networking, this seems to be interesting.
Will follow your videos, and of course big thumbs up for your work.
Dave.

For me, it's essential to know basic server "stuff". Both Windows and Linux. Esxi basics can be also be easily picked up doing virtual network labs.

Wow, that rain!

Here's another thing I heard. The different levels for jobs that begin with "network" are:
1. network technician
2. network administrator
3. network engineer
4. network architect

Thank you so much for this video. This really helped me because I was on the fence on what IT path to take. Being a desktop support tech I want to get to that next step and this video truly helped. There are so many paths within IT and I am glad to come across this video. Thank you!

Thank you so much for these videos! Truly grateful for all of the insight. I'm definitely leaning towards the system side of things (currently hold A+ and Security+). I'm going after my Network+ now. I wish I had found these videos sooner. I'm just looking to steadily better myself and provide better for my family.

I had a really difficult time deciding between the systems and network engineer path, but ended up having a higher passion for the network side.

I think with your extensive background in networking you could be a great person to teach CCNA the only problem is it’s a crowded market. You speak clearly to those of us that haven’t taken the test and are looking for reinforcement.

Hi, I am from India. I am at the profile of system engineer. Now I am confused what should I do next after it either mcsa or aws or vmware or penetration testing or office 365 or ccna, ccnp, ccie. I am entirely confused which one is better. Can you suggest me a little bit info about office 365 exchange server carrer. I hope you will response as soon as possible. I liked your concerns about It carrer. How did you start your carrer in networking then - - - - - - - fully superb. It was adorable to listen you and your personality is also superb. You are looking a handsome guy. Nice to talk to you.

I would consider buying it if I thought it might help me. Currently I am looking to take the CCNT so something about that would be helpful.

I am SysAdmin, Sys Architect, Networking (CCNA RS), VMWare, Citrix, Hyper-v. Looking into getting into programming (Python) and cloud (AWS and GCP) as I'm getting tired of designing, building out new or upgrading infrastructures every month. I've done a little under 400 infrastructure projects so far. When I say infrastructure I mean assess the company and site, design a network (FW, SW, WAP, VPN etc.) design an AD environment with or without Citrix or remote desktop services etc, file servers, print servers, SQL servers, O365 email migration or setup, Azure AD etc. etc.place all VMs on top of Hyper-V or VMware ESXi. P2V physical servers, cluster ESXi host with shared storage (SAN or NAS). But honestly, IDK what I want to do anymore. I'm just sitting hear staring at this python book with no desire to pick it up....

totally agree, both are great! I, personally started out really loving the net engineer route, got my CCNA, then my job forced my into sys admin stuff. Started my MCSA studies, and now I really love both! Windows Server, Linux Red Hat, Cisco IOS and all their awsome devices, its all just really kool and great IT technologies!

According to my brother, I want to do Installation and Migrations. I want to install hardware for servers. Network components and the main server components. I like doing big projects. Giant server rooms.
