Actually, this is a coulombic explosion from solvated electrons released by aluminum reacting with water. Normally aluminum has an oxide coating, but melting it and putting it in ice removes the oxide. The bare aluminum can now react with water, forming aluminum oxide and releasing 2.5 times the energy of a similar mass of nitroglycerin.

2Al + 3H2O -> Al2O3 + 3H2 . This doesn’t happen with foil on ice because there isn’t enough activation energy. The hydrogen gas then reacts with oxygen explosively, once more because there is enough activation energy from the heated aluminum and because of the heat released by the preceding reaction.

That’s so cool! Crazy how fast it happens as well

Fun fact, powdered aluminum has a much higher melting point.

My dad works at Noviles (previously Alcan) and they have giant foundries that they melt aluminum in and he said this will happen if a single drop of moisture gets into the molten aluminum on a way way bigger scale obviously

How many takes did it take for you to say molten aluminium right 😂

This looks awesome. Molten salt into a full fish tank of water is cool also. Stand back though 😎 Just don't forget to relocate your fishies 😂

Having worked in a few foundries. Both molten aluminium and steel are highly volatile in the presence of a damp mould. Got splashed once or twice... Not fun.

As soon as she said it my brain went,
Don't pour by hand, Don't pour by hand.
Cool video

Mythbusters did something similar with thermite and ice. Big ka-boom!

Look in the foundry they pour in sand a special sand no water one drop it explodes you caint use creek sand

The videos are cut short just before the end. Frustrating

You get slapped by OSHA with a fine for neglecting to instruct your foundry operators on the proper procedure for preheating your molds before casting to avoid steam explosions, lol.

I can confirm from casting ant hills when the soil is too damp that this indeed happens with great enough intensity to literally blow your face off

But, what happened to the aluminum? 😕

I've upvoted once for how cool this video is.
Then I downvoted it so I could upvote it again for the sweet edit at the end.
It's a little bit like _Groundhog Day_

I was going to say not really that smart to cause a steam explosion and than guess what happened

Why are you endangering yourselves with these volatile experiments?

Dear America, please learn how to both spell and pronounce "aluminium" correctly. Thanks.

Aluminium. Spell it properly and then say it properly. It’s just an extra letter you need.
