In today's video I'm covering calculating the spousal benefit for a spouse who also has their own benefit. This is important to understand because your own benefit and your spousal payment are NOT calculated the same when it comes to reductions for filing early or increases for filing later.

Thank you so much Devin. This is exactly what I have been asking people about for years. Our situation is the hardest, the one that starts about 8:30 into your video. Dang this stuff is confusing. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I can see where others may have a problem in Devons calculations. I think the issue arises when calculating increased amounts for each year. If I claim my retirement at age 62 and I get a reduction in my benefit at 70% of my FRA. That amount doesn't change from year to year afterwards. So If I am due a $700 benefit at 62, it doesn't increase the next year. It stays the same from then on. If I then have a spouse who files at 67 4 years later, I can claim the spousal benefit if they say are due a $2400 FRA benefit, I would get a Spousal Benefit of $1200 instead of just $700.

Thank you, Mr. Carroll. I actually fall in the category where the lower earning spouse (wife) will be filing for SS benefits. She's seven years older than me. Your explanation has made it clear for me.

Thanks for the explanation on this aspect of SSA benefits. One additional question -- what happens to the spousal benefit should the higher earner pass after reaching full retirement age?

Thank You for the clarification. My wife will take her social security at at 63 and I will wait until 66 8 month for FRA PIA. This strategy will allow her to save and we can max out our benefit at FRA..Filing after FRA is not good as her 100% spousal will not increase. We are better off increasing her spousal benefit at my FRA. Now I need to figure out my health insurance plan at age 64 retirement. I think I will allow low income to maximize AMA subsidy. Thank

If you are 57 years old and you've been receiving Social Security disability benefits for 10 years can you still apply for spousal benefits or does your spouse or ex-spouse rather have to have claimed his Social Security first?

Glad to see how simple these calculations are. Why can’t SS just pick 1 number for every calculation and let it ride. After all it is OUR MONEY, NOT THEIRS we are getting back! Are they afraid we do not need our money back?
