Polytunnel Irrigation Part 1: Using 15mm water pipe.

We have been trying to get irrigation sorted in the poly tunnel for some time now. Although we don't have a huge number of plants the irrigation does allow us to water more easily and at the optimum time (e.g early morning).

We didn't want to use the soaker hose because they seem to be made of old recycled tyres and when we opened one it smelled strongly of tyres. What might this be leeching into the soil? There is very little information about this online and it seems like nobody really knows for sure.

We then considered using regular hose pipe but the poly tunnel gets very hot in the summer and so how safe is having hose at this temperature? We settled on the idea of using water pipe, it is used to deliver drinking water in homes and it can handle passing hot water through it. I think this is our best bet. Of course, consideration should be given to the fact this pipe will lie exposed to UV but then we could paint it with a protective coating to give ourselves a little more peace of mind. Where does one stop with cautionary measures......

Hope this may be of use to some of you out there.
