Hoka Mach 5 After 100 Miles

While many people agree that the Mach 5 is a very fun shoe to run in, there can be some debate as to how durable it is. Without a traditional rubber outsole, some people think they shoe just isn't worth the money. Today, I'll talk about how this shoe has held up on a variety of surfaces over the last 100 miles for me.

I got the Mach 5 in summer 2022. I have logged 250 miles on them to date. I routinely run 5k-10k at a time, and I recently ran a half marathon, all in these shoes. I ran in the mud, in pouring rain, on a track, on a treadmill, and they have stayed durable with no significant appreciable deficits on the tread. They are very durable, very comfy and easy to train in, and I believe they even helped solve issues with my plantar fasciitis (likely multifactorial). I stand by Hokas, this shoe in particular.

Just passed 350km on my pair (using them as a daily trainer) and they're still brilliant! The outsoles have definitely worn down in places, but I never slip in them despite running in pretty terrible English winter weather (rain, frost, wet leaves etc.) I was hugely skeptical when I purchased them, but have to say the durability (and grip) has massively exceeded my expectations. For anyone thinking about picking up a pair in the sales, I'd say go for it.

Ran about 200 miles on these, and I still love them. And as a person who travels a ton, these are great to take when I can only pack one pair of shoes. Looks great, versatile, can do everything 👍🏼 one of my favorites of 2022 for sure

It's interesting to see you pairing the Mach 5 with racing and trail partners; nice addition to the review! I'm still going strong in my Mach 4s (260 miles) with plans to add the 5 once these reach their end of life.

I am really liking the addition at the end of “also consider” recommendations, and “pairs well with”. Nice Kofuzi!!

Done everything from parkrun to 40 mile ultra in these and absolutely love them, my first pair are over 1000 miles!!! and still feel good

Great review Kofuzi! I took my Mach 4 to 430 miles - so I know exactly what you are talking about with regard to rubber coverage on the outsole. The outsole didn't look pretty at that point, but I'd say that the midsole was quite alright up until 325-ish miles. Once I crossed 350 miles, the midsole felt quite dead to me. I do virtually all my running on paved roads.

I’m a heavier runner with average (at best) mechanics and run on sandy, rocky asphalt and I took the Mach 4 to 400 miles. Cosmetically, the outsole looked bad by 250 miles, but the wear was even and the shoe felt great until 350-375 miles. The last 25-50 miles were still fine, but the shoe was relegated to easy runs as I phased them out. With the improvements to the top layer of foam, I would expect to get that many miles or more in the Mach 5.

Ive been using Nike pegasus shoes my whole life. I feel like as the years pass the worse the quality gets. The shoe was also very narrow, didnt have great ventilation, had mediocre cushion, and would tear easily. I just wanted to try something new and sent it with the $140 Mach 5's. Its bizzare too me how comfortable, lightweight, and roomy those shoes are. The only "down side" you pointed out was an upside for me.

Absolutely appreciate the detailed review and insight. I’ve had the Mach 5 since it came out, and only recently tallied the miles at well over 350. As others have noted, there is initial wear and outsole fraying, but it seems to just reach a point and then stop! I’ve had innumerable trainers for serious training miles over the last year, but I keep grabbing the Mach. The cushioning, as you point out, is just always there - nicely tuned no matter the type of run. I also appreciate the stability from the flared midsole - in both heel and forefoot; and the heel bevel is perfect (and appears to be copied by other brands - as was hoka’s rocker, toe spring, etc.). I am on the lighter side at 130lbs., but do use the Mach on both gravel roads and trails - nothing gnarly, primarily mtn. bike trails. Gotta say, love your format!

As someone with a long narrow foot, I appreciate the reference to volume up front and the lacing. I would love to see focus on this in future and perhaps a good top view photo showing how the laced area looks on the foot with the shoe fully tightened.

I have just ticked over 1200km's in my Mach 5's as my daily trainer. I run trails, dirt and road. Durabitly is great, super comfortable and is an awesome shoe. Only looking to get new ones now as the mid sole is starting to loose that pop but after 1200ks would expect that. I'll be buying anothe pair for sure

Rewatched this video trying to decide which shoe to choose from the Hoka Mach 5 or the NB Rebel v3. Currently using the Novablast 3 and Endorphin Pro 3, lol. I had the rebel v2's previously, and they seem to bottom out on me after about 100 miles. After we rewatching this, I may end up going with the Mach 5 if I can find them on sale, thank you as always!

The initial wear on these exposed outsoles looks insane after the first couple of runs, and then it pretty much stays the same for hundreds of miles. Took my Machs to 650 km, no issues, just cosmetics.

Surprised you didn’t compare the Mach 5 to the tecton x when making a trail comparison. They are practically identical besides the X having the plate. Both dual density and seems to be the exact same midsole materials. Pretty similar upper as well. Honestly makes me wonder how well the Mach 5 would perform with a plate too. Seems way closer than a speedgoat comparison.

My Mach 5 has around 150 miles (241km) on them and I still feel like my running on clouds. Sure the outsole doesn't look brand new but it's holding up just fine for me. Appreciate the recommendations for the race day shoe and other comparable daily trainers

I like the Hoka Mach 5, though I ordered a new pair of the 4s. To me the previous iteration is more firm and prolly the profly + too squishy for me underfoot. Even walking around with both shoes, I prefer the the 4s, but that's a personal preference. I hope this trend of squishy marshmallow shoes doesn't extend to all running shoes, and brands keep the responsiveness of a shoe on the firmer side.

I’ve just bought my first pair for £90 in the UK. Looking forward to trying them out.
