Bob Dylan’s Paranoid, Stoned & Nervous Award Speech

Dylan VOLUNTEERED to do this as a way of coxing the notoriously reclusive Lightfoot into accepting this lifetime achievement award which he declined three years running. i think the whole thing is touching and a bit funny as they both struggle to work their way through the whole thing. Also, Dylan said Gordon was his favorite songwriter. Dylan is simply behaving the way he always does, while a uncomfortable Lightfoot, who loathed talking in public due to severe anxiety, accepts the award with a sweet awkwardness, humility and sincere gratitude. If you know anything about Lightfoot's backstory up to this point, you can appreciate even more what this night meant to him. It wasn't just about the award.

Bob was embarrassed at all the adulation and attention he was getting on Gordon's dime. It was supposed to be Gordon's moment in the sun and here he is accepting the award, and the applause is deafening before he even comes out from behind the curtains. Bob doesn't like award shows anyway and the whole scene is just so off-putting to him. He just acted out showing how uncomfortable he was. He wasn't drunk or stoned and definitely not paranoid. Nervous? Nah, that's just his way of putting everyone off guard.

It's 1986. A wall of video monitors playing a live feed is a new thing. Dylan is looking at them the way he does as an artist, so as to make a statement to the viewer; this is not normal, and you (viewer) too should take a moment to look at what is really going on here. He takes the few seconds of media exposure and makes a comment on the spectacle without having to say anything - a masterful use of his time in my opinion.

Actually...the Lights bothered his eyes a bit. He was slightly Near Sighted & didn't have his shades with him. Someone swiped them from the Dressing Room? This was only a couple of years after The USA & Canada drove to raise Funds for Ethiopia
