If large corporations can’t afford the rent, then the rent is way TOO high.

Greed, pure and simple. Landlords in NYC are the worst. Now let’s see how many years this prime location will sit vacant!

Pretty stupid landlord. They thought Starbucks can afford it. Now they are gonna have a hard time finding someone who can pay the rent.

Add this to the list of empty storefronts all over NYC.. very sad state of affairs.
I worked right down the street and used to shop here and at The Riviera Cafe before which was there before this Starbucks opened.

Watch. It will be vacant for the next 3 years. All that rent revenue lost....three because the landlord wanted more $. I live in midtown and there have been the same vacant storefronts for 4-5 years.

I lived in the East Village in the early 2000s and there were several mom and pop coffee shops you could go to and sit and work on your computer all day, chat with friends, buy a great, homemade muffin, play chess... Then starbucks came along and put them all out of business, for some reason. I never got the allure of the horrible food there and the overpriced, sugary poisonous drinks but hey...there are people in nyc who will still vote democrat after the complete destruction of their city so what do I know about humanity?

I used to hang out on 8th St back in the day when Greys Papaya and all the shops were there. It was ‘the place to be’. Always busy and vibrant. It’s so different in the village now. So much has closed. It’s sad to see. I still go get my cut at Astor now and then and I feel like I see more and more closures each time I go. I miss the old village from the 90’s early 2000’s.

I was very sad when I found out that this Starbucks had closed. I went to graduate school at NYU between 2007-2011 and the Astor Place Starbucks was always a stop for me before I went to class. I’d get a coffee, a package of Madeleines, maybe meet up with a classmate or just sit and read or people-watch. There was always a nice vibe in that Starbucks. I read in several places that it was the rent that drove them to close which is a shame. I have some good memories of my grad school days from there. I wish the employees well and I hope that they’re all able to find work elsewhere.
