Blowing out an Emu Egg

We blew out some emu eggs!

This was difficult, but got easier as we learned to shred up the yolk inside so it would drain easier.

I drill a 1/4 hole in my egg, then put the needle of a ball pump into the hole and gently pump air into the egg while allowing the egg to run out of the hole. Works beautifully on ostrich eggs as well. Only one hole too!!!

Just thought, wonder if a large syringe would help suck it out. I remember getting dizzy blowing out eggs lol but glad you were able to preserve some ;) They are a pretty egg :) Washing out with vinegar may help with the smell (some people I believe fill eggs with resin but it may expand and crack it. Just be careful if you do, may want layers to dry a little at a time.)

We always use an air compressor, to them out. Saves on your lungs

Did it for school art class (with a chicken egg) for creating pisankas.
But emu egg... This is a whole new level! :D

One egg is about a dozen hen eggs. Emus lay in our wintertime

You can carve a scene into the shell as each layer of the shell is a slightly different colour, giving you some contrast

I see some guys use emu eggs for their art craft ages ago hopefully you guys also do that if you have time👍, if you guys have the electric tool use for trimming nails and beak I think that's the tool they used to carved design in eggs

My dad has drained the emu eggs before. He would put a hole in the shell and then spray some WD-40 inside through the hole. He said that worked the best. And he only needed one hole in the egg.

You can buy longer length drill bits in smaller sizes that will "scramble" the yolk for easier drainage and use a hand pump, like for a ball to gently force air into the shell.

I have 30 year old Emu egg and I DIDNT BLOW IT OUT. I really LUCKED OUT that it didnt explode. Its color has faded some. Other than that it's just fine. But I wouldn't advise it. 🥴
