We take a close look at the basics of capital ship combat on today's Star Wars Battle Breakdown.

Star Wars, and Star Wars Legends lore especially, has focused a lot of time of explaining space warfare. From the tactics of Star Destroyers and Mon Calamari cruisers during the Galactic Civil War and Beyond, to specific maneuvers like the Ackbar Slash or the Thrawn Pincer. I'll talk about it all on today's Star Wars Legends Battle Breakdown video!

My boss walked in on me watching this vid and called me a nerd, but jokes on him because now I have a better understanding of capital ship combat and he doesn’t.

Obviously, you're not a Mon-Calamari. Otherwise your five battle tactics would have been as follows:
1. Ramming.
2. Ramming a small ship into a big ship.
3. Ramming a big ship into a big ship.
4. Ramming a small ship into a big ship, thus ramming said big ship into another big ship, causing those ships to crash into an important military installation of sorts.
5. Hyperspace ramming.

I have always wanted a Star Wars movie to do true justice to a large fleet battle, where the capital ships actually use their firepower instead of just being set pieces..

You should talk about how you would command a blockade

Star Wars capital ship tactics had always fascinated me. Equipped with advanced technology, but sometimes uses them in a way that would be acceptable in WW1. Quite fascinating indeed.

The Ackbar Slash looks like a great way to get yourself killed. It's basically lining your ships up so that they can be summarily double broadsided ala Beckett in the last Pirates of the Caribbean movie.

Except it's worse because earth ships of that time couldn't fire too much forward at you while you closed the distance.

I can sorta see the appeal, since if you can break through, the ISD's have notoriously exposed rears, but the first ship in the slash is almost certainly on a suicide mission to soak up fire for those behind.

Lifelong Star Wars fan here and you’re killing it analyzing things I’ve been thinking about for decades Eck! Thank you! One thing I’ve always wondered tho, what is the effective RANGE of turbolasers? Great analysis with the different defense zones, but can you put some numbers on them???

Idea: do an episode where you describe your “perfect fleet”, with access to ships from Star Wars, Halo, Mass Effect, and/or other sci-if universes.

The ultimate Capital Ship combat strategy is to throw the pommel to end the enemy fleet rightly.

The thing you mentioned about having ships jump in from nearby systems made me think about the Battle of Endor. The Rebel Alliance leadership should have known that the plans to the second death star would not be that easily obtained. They should have jumped their primary Fleet to a nearby system and then sent reconnaissance vessels to scout the entire Endor system.. this way they could have avoided being boxed in during the battle. After all the only reason the Battle of Endor wasn't a disaster that ended the Rebellion was because the imperial capital ships were not permitted to engage the primary Rebel Fleet. Many of the most significant victories against the Empire during the Galactic Civil War had very little to do with Rebel ingenuity and almost everything to do with Imperial incompetence. Also, how would 3 Starhawk fare against a Resurgent class Star Destroyer?

THANK you! I rarely see people discuss Capital Ship tactics/combat in general, and even less in the sci-fi setting.

Crossing the T is actually a naval tactic that goes back to the age of sail! That's really cool that they implement it in the SW universe.

I love how the Thrawn Pincer is basically a standard bubble camp in Eve Online.
Also, your dog is lovely!

Something I wish they would portray on screen: 3d combat. Other than some a few shots in Revenge of the Sith, all the capital ships duke it out on the same parallel plane, even if there are some ships flying above or below others. I want to see a Rebel fleet launching bombing runs perpendicular to an Imperial fleet, from above or below. Space combat should be in three dimensions, and not like they are a bunch of WW1/WW2 naval ships. Ships should be pointed every which way in 360 degrees on an x, y, z axis.
