Rural crime: Why are criminals stealing farm GPS equipment?

Rural crime cost farmers £49.5 million last year, bringing the rate of theft on farms up by 22%.

Farm manager at Hill Farm in Suffolk, Glenn Buckingham, joined us to discuss why thieves are targeting GPS systems used on farm vehicles such as combine harvesters and tractors.

The other criminals are the companies who charge farmers £5k for a small box with a GPS receiver and a screen.

I am 65 and was born on the farms and worked them for years. We never needed these units and for hundreds of years farms ran without them and worked perfectly well.

The machinery companies essentially don’t care. More business for them!

They can track a tractor down to 5mm in a field anywhere in the world but funny enough when it’s stolen it can’t be fully terminated or tracked!

10 years for the thieves. 20 years for those who buy the stolen goods.

Is it Albanians and other Eastern Europeans stealing it and shipping it back to their home countries?

This sounds like a design failure. There's no way a person should be able to steal a small piece of a tractor and have it continue to function if hacked.
There are many ways to ensure this. Given the massive cost of farm equipment such measures could be trivial in cost.

We need much better property protection and self protection laws as the UK has by far the worst in the world and ten years for anyone caught stealing.

the reason this is happening is that there easy targets out there they think there untouchable to much security and cameras on the houses in the towns

They should be getting push alerts based on motion detection. Probably also employ thermal sensors. Security sounds pretty lame. Clearly they need to beef up their security, but the police force is inadequate nowadays. Should be double the numbers of police.
