As an aspiring full stack dev trying to get into the industry while I’m in school, these projects are exactly the types of ideas I was looking for. Thanks for the inspiration man!

You are the reason I fell in love with Python. And likely the reason I got over that initial “hump” that I couldn’t get past a few years ago when I was first in school for CS. Now I love programming and learning new things. Thanks Tim

I never realized how involved the social media clone projects were. I assumed they wouldn’t be too impressive since they’re just clones, but after hearing you list everything that goes into them, I think I’ll have try one later on. Good video 👍

Most of this is out of reach for me at the moment but I'm saving this for the future when I am ready to pound out this stuff.. at least it gives me a goal to reach for.

Writing fresh code with the intention of being mildly useful on your own in very, very difficult and is not something that beginners should really be trying to do. The first part of learning to code is obviously to watch and listen to others. Copying their code as they explain it is very helpful but you're still a noob, you can't move anywhere without your hand being held.

The second step to learning to code is when you can read and understand the logic of a fresh piece of code maybe 50+ lines long you haven't encountered before on your own. You can understand it and understand why its doing what its doing at every step. In my experience it took over 100 hours before I reached this step. Some people may be quicker but I got good grades in school and this is how long it took me.

Third step is making your own snippets of code to modify something. You're not writing a whole program, you're modifying one that you got from somewhere else. You can make it perform a different outcome and do as you wish. This step takes an incredibly long time as when you start doing this, you run into errors you don't understand and it takes a lot of problem solving to overcome.

Final step is writing your own program from scratch. You've modified enough code for hundreds, likely thousands of hours. I would go as far to say that most programmers never even master this step, normally their job doesn't even require them to.

So you can see that the trope of 'writing your own program as a beginner' is a fun idea but in essence if you're doing it with less than 100 hours under your belt you're just copying what someone else is doing you wouldn't be able to do the first two lines on your own.

Yo Tim, how did you make your resume at 0:15? It looks really nice, and I've been looking for ways to properly style my resume and separate the data from the display 😁
