The highest decision-making body of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) core committee at its emergency meeting on Saturday night decided to pull out of the BJP-led NDA alliance over the centre's farm bills thus snapping a three-decade-old alliance with the saffron party.

"The government's decision on farm Bills is deeply injurious to the interests not only of the farmers but also of the khet mazdoor (farm labourers), traders, arhtiyas and the Dalits who depend on the well-being of agriculture," a party statement said.

The decision came at the end of the marathon meeting at the party headquarters here, lasting over three hours.

Later, addressing the media, Sukhbir Badal said that SAD would continue to stand by its core principles of peace and communal harmony and of guarding the interests of Punjab, Punjabis in general and the Sikhs and the farmers in particular.

He said the decision has been taken after deep deliberations with the people of Punjab, especially the party workers and farmers, farm labourers, traders, arhtiyas and other poor sections of society.

Sukhbir Badal said that the Bills on agricultural marketing brought by the BJP government are 'lethal' and 'disastrous' for the already beleaguered farmers.

Very well analysed! This departure of the SAD has been like a prayer answered for the BJP. Since the last assembly elections of 2017, the BJP in Punjab has been seeking to go it alone. The groundswell of public anger against the blatant and rampant corruption of the SAD (Badal family) was very palpable. But for the BJP central leadership it was not easy to jettison their long standing ally, a sort of a moral dilemma. This has now been well resolved and the BJP in Punjab has a chance to spread its wings. Good riddance to useless baggage! Jai Bharat. Vande Matram.

Except B J P no political party is able to run the country i n such a crucial period. It is very sad that opposition is not doing his role fairly.

It is not fair to ditch the oldest ally of BJP which supported BJP when no one else did. PS Badal had been the most loyal supporter of BJP and Vajpayee govt. Allies should be treated with more tolerance and respect. Especially such alliance which managed to bring Hindu Sikh unity in Punjab despite big rift created by Congress and terrorism. National interest above party politics. Punjab is a sensitive border state. Need to be more deliberate in approach.
