Even as early as the original Star Wars in 1977, Jabba the Hutt was always intended to be an integral part of the saga. However, it wasn’t until The Return of the Jedi that George Lucas’ vision was finally realised. This is an insight into how a skilled creative team developed Ralph McQuarrie’s concept art and brought the full-sized Jabba puppet to life by way of a handful of dedicated operators and puppeteers.

Stuart Freeborn oversaw the design of the original Jabba the Hutt puppet and Toby Philpott operated the left arm and head, Mike Edmonds operated the tail, and David Barclay controlled the right arm, mouth, and even spoke some of his lines.
