Arrow Vs helmet unexpected result!

I shoot GoPros with arrows (by mistake) and so I put together a protective helmet shield for my new one.......and then put an arrow straight through it.

I thought the helmet was thin and a bit rubbish, but after testing its thickness it is clear yet again that longbow arrows are dangerous!

Helmet is made from mild steel, 0.2% carbon and is 1.8mm thick at the impact point.

Collectively as a team, we are planning to make four more "Medieval Mythbusting - arrows vs armour" films this summer, but this time using medieval steel and looking at a helmet and arms and the maille as well as the breast plate. This will require funding and so if you are interested in helping out, we will be letting you know later in the year.

Arrows go through sandbags, arrows go through helmets, arrows explode into deadly shrapnel when hitting a good breastplate.... bows are seriously hardcore.

I don't remember the last time I've looked forward to something as much as 'Medieval Mythbusting' Part 2 ! Can't wait!

I have this nagging feeling that this might not be the last GoPro Tod will buy.

Tod: Finally the go-pro is totally safe now. Also Tod: Penetrates the front and dents the back of the helmet.

Someone needs to collect all this data of breaking an splintering arrows, ricochets, random penetrations of armour and apply it to some CGI it so we can get an idea of what "arrow storm" really means.

It’s lovely how a simple attempt to protect the cameras accidentally gave us unexpected insight into such a complex topic, can’t wait for this to be followed up! Keep up the great work man, this stuff is my favorite thing on the planet.

Can't wait to see how a good medieval replica helmet fares. If the steel used is of a similar thickness and quality as the breastplate you wouldn't expect an arrow to punch a hole through it quite as easily.

I cannot wait for those new videoes with an authentic bowman, a professional arrowsmith and professional armourer answering our 'myths' about medieval warfare!!!

How utterly terrifying for the common soldier. The sound of a steady barrage of arrows, each arriving with this kind of force, into a formation of men in that sort of armor, would live in your nightmares forever.

First thing I think:
"That's a whole lot of arrow in that helmet."

We need a medieval armour vs medieval ballista test with 1-1, 5kg heavy bolts. Or a medieval armour vs a full-auto dragonhunter ballista made by you and Joerg Sprave.

"Knight Vision" is a prime example of British humor. Well, I suppose that would be 'humour' in this case 😅

This looks very promising! (And physics never cease to amaze me at the marvel... that trajectory the arrow did inside the helmet is really interesting)

Not even 45 sec into the video I got giddy thinking "Yes Yes Yes! More tests to be done!"

*I LOVE THIS LOCK DOWN LONGBOW STUFF* it really shows what longbows were capable of and OMG they are devastating weapons...

Can't wait for those episodes. It's insane how little we know about the actual ability of weapons that were used for thousands of years. Like these guys are the only ones in the world to ever do this which is mind boggling to me. Everyone just assumes that the arrows could or couldn't with no actual proof.

Thanks for making lockdown a little more enjoyable

For working out Armour equivalency against big stuff (tank rounds and the like) you can use RHA equivalence. This is a ratio you multiply the thickness of material by to get the equivalent thickness of tempered Armour plate. Here mild steel is generally reckoned to be between 0.6-0.7 RHA equivalent. Meaning that the 1.8mm mild steel is equivalent to something like 1.1-1.2mm of tempered medium-carbon steel.
