One year after playing Division ll hockey in College for two years I moved for a job opportunity in Florida, when the Lightning were a new team. I found an ice rink, and got in two on defense, and one as had acquired the pads, so we would have a goalie, instead of a turned over net in pickup or drop in hockey. I had great pants and good gear so I played maybe 50/50 goal or defense.
My first team, because I was new....was a Draft, so the 8 teams in the league could figure out if you could skate. I played Defense, and was the first pick, by the Worst team. The goalie quit after 2 games, so I played goal for the next 18 got slaughtered by 8 or 9 goals every game, but my team weren't upset with were so badly out shot every game.
At the end of the season, somebody actually compiled the had more Saves, than the next closest goalie had seen Total Shots.
I learned a lot, and sorta cut my own path from next go round, I didn't have to do the Draft Drop IN Skate, and I ended up goaltending for 2 different teams, in two different rinks.
Hockey was so fun then, for a guy dropping into Florida, of all places.
Cut my teeth in Mid Atlantic and New England as a youth😉
