Adonai | The Names of God and What Are Their Meanings?

God has gone to great lengths to reveal Himself to His covenant people throughout the ages. The purpose of His revelation is relational, so that man can be without excuse for accepting the precious gift of salvation.

Our Heavenly Father continues this revelation through the use of His covenant names. And in the second message in our Bible study series on the Names of God, we examine the name Adonai.

Unlike many of the names of God which primarily focus on the attributes inherent to God, the name Adonai focuses not on God's attributes or strengths but on his position as Lord over all.

It's through our understanding of who Jesus is, and our role in this relationship, that He is pleased to use His servants/slaves to carry out certain details associated with the Godhead's bigger plan.

When we understand that slavery in the divine (not human) sense is a beautiful institution where God's power is put on display before the world, ...strongholds will be broken, salvation can be received and all honor and glory will find its rightful place in the throne-room of heaven.

I am a 75 yr young woman who, when searching for the names of God, found this series. In Galatians 3:28 Paul writes that is neither male nor female: for we are all one in Christ Jesus. Oh this is the STUFF!! This is POWERFUL, beautiful and so amazing to me! Thanks for this teaching, I kind of tripped over it and fell in....and I'm SO THANKFUL. I just LOVE learning who my LORD is, and unwrapping each layer of who He is and what He has for us, when we choose to become his servants. Without comprehending the precious Names of God and how these names are used in the word, we cannot even begin to comprehend the Truth. I studied the names of God a LONG time ago. It wasn't even remotely the same--I didn't grasp the depth or importance, I don't even think I understood the reverence. It's amazing how the Lord changes things for you when you stop trying to use Him as a "self-help" technique, and seek to serve Him instead--it has taken me a LONG time to realize Praise God.

Today I was in prayer at church and the pastor was praying and in prayer he said, God reveal who you are to us. Me without prior knowledge I began speaking in tongues and said Adonai. I had a dream last night. Jesus has come to me three times so far in my dreams. First one was rapturing me. Second was him telepathically speaking to me about how many heavens there was. The third was last one was last night and all I can remember was Jesus whole face and body telling him His name is Adonai, not Jesus himself but Gods name was. Jesus was telling me Gods name is ADONAI & he kept repeating it to me. I wasn’t scared but i wondered why He told me this, in this dream.

The problem here is that some married, Christian men that are spiritually abusive take verses like these and demand total obedience from their wives, some even wanting to call them master. They want their wives to take them at their word on everything because the men say that God speaks through them to guide their wives never taking for a moment the wife's points of views, discernment, advice, etc.

thanks! he is a great speaker. i have a question you might be able to help me with: do you know what is the name of the babylonian tradition to only mention their deities' names during certain ceremonies or seasons of the year? i learned that the hebrews adopted that tradition during the exhile and continued it even after they returned from babylon, and that might have played a part in why they removed the Most High's Name, and replaced it with the tetragrammaton. Can you tell me the name of that babylonian tradition?
