The Hindu Vedas are a collection of ancient religious texts that form the foundation of Hinduism. The word "Veda" is derived from the Sanskrit root "vid," meaning "knowledge" or "wisdom." There are four Vedas: Rigveda, Samaveda, Yajurveda, and Atharvaveda. Each Veda consists of four parts: Samhitas (hymns), Brahmanas (rituals and ceremonies), Aranyakas (meditation and worship), and Upanishads (philosophical teachings).

Rigveda: The oldest of the Vedas, the Rigveda is a collection of hymns dedicated to various deities, composed in a poetic and metrical form. It consists of 1,028 hymns divided into ten books (mandalas) and addresses deities like Agni (fire), Indra (king of gods), Varuna (god of cosmic order), and others.

Samaveda: This Veda is primarily a collection of melodies and chants used during rituals. The Samaveda is closely related to the Rigveda, as it often borrows hymns from it but arranges them in a musical form for chanting during rituals.

Yajurveda: The Yajurveda provides guidelines for performing rituals and sacrifices. It is divided into two main branches: the Black Yajurveda (Krishna Yajurveda), which contains prose mantras for rituals, and the White Yajurveda (Shukla Yajurveda), which includes both prose and verse mantras.

Atharvaveda: Unlike the other three Vedas, the Atharvaveda contains a diverse collection of hymns, spells, charms, and incantations. It addresses various aspects of life, including healing, marriage, and everyday concerns. The Atharvaveda reflects a more folk and mystical aspect of Vedic culture.

The Vedas are considered the oldest sacred scriptures of Hinduism and are highly revered. They were transmitted orally for generations before being eventually compiled in written form. The composition of the Vedas is attributed to ancient sages called Rishis. The philosophical concepts found in the Vedas laid the groundwork for later Hindu philosophical traditions, especially the ideas explored in the Upanishads. The Vedas continue to play a central role in Hindu religious and spiritual life, influencing rituals, ceremonies, and philosophical discourse.
