BATTLE DAMAGE ON RARE ARMOURED CUPOLA IN NORMANDY

Check out the battle damage on this rare armoured cupola on display in Normandy. This type of armoured cupola was once a familiar sight along the defensive structures of the Atlantikwall.

Today very few remain as many were taken for scrap following the end of the war in 1945.
These massive steel turrets would be incorporated into a two storey concrete bunker and provide up to six embrasures for German machine guns to fire upon enemy forces through 360 degrees.

This one - originally from a defensive position in Cherbourg - has taken a serious amount of impacts from high explosive rounds. We wouldn’t have wanted to be inside this giant bell-like construction when it was taking fire!
It’s thought the rounds were part of training exercises from land based 75mm guns following the capture of the port.

You can get up close to this cupola at the D-Day Omaha Museum at Vierville-sur-Mer, one of our favourite museums in Normandy. Who’s visited the museum?

The amount of kinetic energy it took to not just put dents into something that thick and hard, but to melt the hardened steel into basically clay to squish a hole. Amazingly horrific.

The ones on the edges of the window definitely sent a lethal amount of shrapnel into that bunker

The use of silence and wind across the mic is a very dignified way of presenting such powerful images that speak for themselves.

Crazy how high powered weapons make steel react like butter.

The craftsmen were extremely skilled back in the day. Survived a war and 80 years later - it’s still standing!

No words need to be said. The damage to that metal screams a horrifically violent moment in time.

No matter how much time passes, the feeling you get seeing remnants of a brutal war will remain

Seeing solid metal deformed like melted butter is terrifying. I can't imagine how loud and scary it was inside one of these.

Imagine a16” inch shell, weighing around 2, 000 pounds fired from 19 miles away hitting your “safe place.”

The greatest Generation ever❤R.I.P
To all the fallen heroes that were in this war. My dad was in the Navy Air corps. I tried and tried to get him to talk about it he never would speak a word of that time in history. He would always tell me it was the worst time that he's ever been through in his entire life and he's been through some rough times. He passed away in 2013 he was 93😢 and when they played the bugle at his funeral I lost it. But it was an honor to watch them fold that flag and give it to my sister and utter the words from a Grateful Nation❤ I love you and miss you everyday dad R.I.P

My dad passed away at 93 about 4 years ago. He was in northern Italy with the 10th Mountain. Silver Star and Bronze star.

Kenapa orang zaman sekarang lupa akan pedihnya perjuangan karena perang.😢😢😢apakah kita tidak bisa hidup saling menghormati dan saling berdampingan ...itulah kenapa pentingnya rasa peduli...❤❤❤

This is a special steel, it is called armor, it is made viscous so that it does not crumble and does not form fragments that can hit people inside. All armored vehicles are also made from this steel.
