BATTLE DAMAGE ON RARE ARMOURED CUPOLA IN NORMANDY
Check out the battle damage on this rare armoured cupola on display in Normandy. This type of armoured cupola was once a familiar sight along the defensive structures of the Atlantikwall.
Today very few remain as many were taken for scrap following the end of the war in 1945.
These massive steel turrets would be incorporated into a two storey concrete bunker and provide up to six embrasures for German machine guns to fire upon enemy forces through 360 degrees.
This one - originally from a defensive position in Cherbourg - has taken a serious amount of impacts from high explosive rounds. We wouldn’t have wanted to be inside this giant bell-like construction when it was taking fire!
It’s thought the rounds were part of training exercises from land based 75mm guns following the capture of the port.
You can get up close to this cupola at the D-Day Omaha Museum at Vierville-sur-Mer, one of our favourite museums in Normandy. Who’s visited the museum?
