I really related to Ross and Mike just awkwardly making small talk, desperately trying to find common interests. When you're in a large friend group, and you decide to interact with one person one on one, you discover that you need the rest of the group around.

See, scenes like *this* are where the writing really shone for Ross and Rachel.

A lot of the toxicity of their relationship came from the rule of drama that sometimes dominates sitcoms.
They fight because that’s what they’re “supposed” to do as sitcom characters.

When really, the show is more interesting when these two flawed, imperfect people push each other to grow and be better.

The writing was terrible for couples on the show (until late) and they rarely had a chance to talk like actual adults because of the forced-sitcom perspective.
