The 2025 BMW X5, a midsize luxury SUV, qualifies for the TOP SAFETY PICK+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety due to its solid performance in the updated moderate overlap front test. This test, introduced in 2022, emphasizes rear-seat safety by positioning an additional dummy in the second row behind the driver.

The X5 earns a good rating in this test, demonstrating excellent protection for the driver and effective rear restraints. Measurements from the rear dummy showed no elevated injury risk, although the dummy’s head came closer than desired to the front seatback.

In addition to the moderate overlap test, to earn the TOP SAFETY PICK+ award, vehicles must achieve good ratings in the small overlap front and updated side tests, and an acceptable or good rating in the pedestrian front crash prevention evaluation. They also must feature acceptable or good-rated headlights across all trim levels.

The X5 meets these criteria with a standard front crash prevention system that earns a good rating in the pedestrian evaluation and acceptable headlights across all trims.
