Why doesn't the indicator light do exactly what it's supposed to do which is stay lit up while it's charging so we know when it's done charging?

I've been charging my brand new airpods for the first time for about 12 hours now and the indicator light shows nothing unless I open up the lid and it's still orange afyer all these hours. What exactly is the point of an indicator light if it indicates nothing while or during or after it's done charging?
