Hey y'all asking about volume control, that seems to work great but only on the Pro 2 model. If, like me, you are looking this up years later with pro 2 airpods: just slide along the sensor area (can feel on front of stem), lightly slide up/down for volume.

Like so many others here, I spent way too long thinking either my pods or my fingers were defective lol. I know its our fault, everyone just tosses paper manuals aside & goes straight to the app... but knowing that (& how many people seem to think their pods dont work, i think apple might want to put some sort of visual clue in the app about the (nearly invisible) sensor location, instead of just referring to "the stem".
