What is dy/dx?

I wish this video made the difference between Δy/Δx and dy/dx more clear, but otherwise this is a fantastic video. Thank you for making it! I don't know how long I would've been in the dark about what dy/dx really means without this video.

For anyone wondering, both describe the change in the y-axis each time you increment x by 1. The difference is that Δy/Δx describes the change between two points in a function, while dy/dx describes the change of a tangent to the function. You could say that dy/dx is the same as Δy/Δx between two impossibly close points.

What it actually is, is the instantaneous rate of change. It is the limit has the rise and run go to zero! Profound stuff! Love calculus! Very useful to physicists and engineers!

Question for anyone who stumbles on this: I heard the “Calculus in 20 Minutes” guy say “dy/dx is a noun, d/dx is a verb.” I’m not clear on what he means. Where would you use dy/dx and where would you use d/dx?
