Tesla HW3 to HW4 upgrade

In this video, I discuss selling my 2019 M3 and buying a Used Tesla 22 MY. We also cover Elon Musk's mention of the 2024 Q4 Earnings call HW3 to HW4. Is FSD worth $8K on an older Tesla running HW3? In my opinion, NO! The reason is you can buy used Teslas with Full FSD for under $24. We also have no timeline on when this change is supposed to happen.

Key Points:

- Cars equipped with Hardware 3 (HW3) will not achieve full autonomous Full Self-Driving (FSD) capability (this is not surprising).
- HW3 vehicles will lag behind those with Hardware 4 (HW4) in terms of software updates/rollouts.
- Only owners who purchased the full FSD package on a HW3 vehicle will be eligible for the HW4 upgrade; monthly subscribers will not qualify.

NOTES:
The FSD Package is based on the VIN or car, not on the user's account. Therefore, if you purchased a used car that includes FSD, you are eligible, even if you are the second owner who never paid for it.

So many people bought hw3 cars after being told the car had true self driving hardware which would even turn it into a robotaxi in the future, but tesla has abandoned all those buyers except the few who dropped $10k on useless beta software. Pretty disappointing that they won't have a hardware upgrade at all for the huge majority of the buyers who made the brand succesfull.

As a Tesla HW3 owner and TSLA stockholder, I am beyond frustrated with FSD and Elon's false promises. I am angry. After 4 years and 50, 000 miles, we now learn that our Tesla Model Y will never be able to reach true FSD without a "difficult" hardware upgrade. How long will that take, months, years? I'm retired, so I have to wonder if I will I even live long enough to experience true FSD. I understand that I bought a beta version the FSD software and that it would take time to perfect. I'm okay with that, but now new buyers with HW4 are enjoying a far superior experience with constant upgrades, while my car's value continues to depreciate with HW3 which nobody wants. I want the latest version of FSD now, which is what was promised, or I want my money back now.

I was watching this and then realized you were driving on my old route to work!
For the record I have a MS 90D 2016 (currently HW3) with FSD purchased outright as well as a 2015 MS 70D that is a HW1 for life car but at least has the classic unlimited supercharging. Both of them still have the free mcu data for life so I had the MCU1s upgraded to MCU2s as well.
Im looking forward to the improvements. I've felt it improve from HW 2.5 to HW3 and ill be waiting for my HW4 as promised Elon.

I Knew the HW3 wasnt going to cut it. Dont get me wrong, its great and i really enjoy it.. but yeah i called BS on that from the start. I bought the FSD knowing that his timelines were a joke. For me it was just worth it for the price since i keep my cars until the wheels fall off. I knew id get my moneys worth out of a hilariously lofty goal like "rObIOTaXI ready s00n" lol.
That being said i saw it go from super shitty/ okay at times on hw 2.5 to later the car being able to completely handle my 51 mile commute with no issue from my driveway to the gate at work a vast majority of the time.

I have a 2019 Model X long range with HW3 FSD, and I love FSD so much I don’t even have the words.

I bought a used model Y that had FSD and really hope that I'm included in the HW4 update. There was a premium on the price of the car because of FSD.

Hi, so the estimate of the optional purchases of FSD for HW3 Model Ys and Model 3s are perhaps between 200, 000 and 300, 000 vehicles which is a lot of cars (and disgruntled folks) Tesla left behind. Cheers!

I have a 2019 model3 dual motor and purchased FSD when I ordered it. I use Fsd everyday and have been stuck on V12.5.4.2 for a few months. Would love to get the upgrade to HW4 but would like to get 12.6 3 in mean time. Hopefully they will send out 12.6.3 soon. I have driven on FSD for over 111, 000 miles.

He did not say no one with HW3 bought FSD outright, he said he was happy there were not that many that bought it. I bought a used x with FSD and am looking forward to the upgrade to HW4.

Make sure your option is set to Advanced on the sw update screen. Also, its probably a good idea to do a full reboot of the vehicle. Pretty much everyone is on 12.6 now, all the new 12.5.4.2 sw versions are going to EU and the ROW. 12.6 is MUCH better on the highway, and smoother in general but on city streets it's a bit more timid, at least on .2. Very happy he's going to update our HW3 cars, I was just about to sell my MSP and take a massive loss just for stupid AI4.

I have FSD in my 2018 M3. I paid $2, 000 in 2019 and was upgraded from HW2->HW3 in 2020. I have zero plans to ever buy a new car and banking on being upgraded to HW4. When do you see my upgrade happening?

I currently have a 2018 M3 with 2.5HW. Since I already have EAP, it will only cost me $2k to buy FSD. I called the service center a few months ago and asked how much it would cost to upgrade the HW and he said $1k but it might be free depending on my VIN (not holding my breath) and that it would be HW3.

My question is, with Elon saying they would eventually upgrade HW3 users with HW4 for free, would I still be eligible for that, or will I have bought it too late? If I will forever be stuck on HW3 and not get any updates, I'm not sure if I would want to spend the money on it.

I bought it on my 2022 LR Model Y. I use FSD everyday to and from work. I'm on v12.6.4

I'm certain Tesla and Mr. Musk will come out with a fix to update the system HW3 to HW4 because Mr. Musk said so in the last earnings call, but the main question is 'when.' I always remember Tesla is trying to do something which has never been tried before, never. From my view, Mr. Musk is someone I can trust, plus he's bet the company on FSD UNsupervised so I'll give them the benefit of doubt and bide my time. Filing a class action suit means the lawyers get money and we'll walk away with pennies on the dollar, plus no FSD. Besides, FSD v13.x on HW4 has bugs from what I've seen. Btw, I'm a retired mechanical engineer who's 70 years old. Sure want Tesla to sort it out sometime soon before I die! I'm kind of hoping for the former. Cheers!

I don't think that Elon or Tesla has every said that the HW upgrade for HW3 would be to HW4. They just said it would need to be upgraded, not to what HW or AI.

Hardware 3 Tesla owners should be a class action lawsuit against Tesla. I bought mine believing once FSD is completed I can subscribe to it with a download. Now Tesla is basically saying that would not happen because I have hardware 3.

Great commentary, as if I was listening to my thoughts…..

My FSD experience is getting worse with every 'update', big and small. Frequent phantom braking, changing lanes on the freeway for no reason causing other drivers to take evasive action, stopping at signs that say stop sign ahead, and steering that used to be smooth on curves has reverted to jerkiness. I no longer use FSD, as the apprehension of it doing something stupid or dangerous now far outweighs and functionality or enjoyment it may offer. I paid $10K for this 4 years ago, and would love to get my money back, as it is not a useable service. And, the possibility of Tesla upgrading my HW3 computer . . . I'm not holding my breath. When I bought my MS+ I was probably a fan-boy of Tesla. Now, I'm just the owner of a car that has lost in the area of $65, 000 of value in 3 years, and it drops significantly every month. I fortunate as I've only put 15, 300 miles on it and have solar at home so maintain it has been a minimal output. But by the time I decide to get another vehicle in probably 2-3 years, the MS+ I was so proud of when I bought it will be worth next to nothing. I hope I won't have to pay for it to be recycled due to the batteries at that point. I guess I'm not a fan-boy anymore😞
