Boosting the Big Muff: before or after?

It's important to know how to choose the position of our pedals in chain.
The booster is a very important tool which can:
* Give you a volume boost
* Improve your EQ
* Push the preamp
* Add gain to what come next
David GIlmour does quite a different use of the booster, with the precise purpose of sculpting his tone.
Since we can't know for sure the exact way he uses the booster, 2 parties were born: the ones who think the booster stays before the muff and the ones who think it stays after.

Hi Tony, I use an EHX Hot Wax and I place my EHX Ram's Head reissue after it, I like the sound I get in this consideration as it helps stand out better in the mix. Thanks for effort put in each of your videos !

Muff > Coloursound-style Power Booster clone sat as a very low gain, open tone shaper is great.

BD-2 into Muff is cool. I also like the Xotic pedals, RC, AC Boosters and BB Preamp. Maxon ROD-881 for my tube driver impersonation :)

A good EQ pedal or boost with active EQ is a Muff's best friend!

For me, I kinda had to move various pedals around on the board so they would play together nicely. My older 3 knob T D has been modded with a bias knob and I'm using a 12a7u tube and running at 18v for more clean headroom. My boost, a Wampler dB-1, is near in end of the line so it boost everything before the signal goes into a silent modded 10 band E Q. The other 18v pedal. I've had my board together well over 4 yrs now without any trouble at all.

I put the Ehx Ram's Head before the Origin Effects DCX Boost and Benson Preamp. It works wonders, and stacking with one of the two, or all 3, with the tone sculpting capabilities of the DCX Boost... so versatile and glorious sounds

I got very good results with an OCD set at minimum gain after a MUFF, also works with other kind of Distortions (instead of MUFF) very well. At first i tried an OD-3 instead of the OCD because it's also a very transparent Overdrive that sounds good into a clean Fender or so, but it can't take a MUFF nearly as good as the OCD does, in my opinion very interesting because the OCD and OD-3 sound nearly identical with lowest gain setting except slightly more bottom end in the OCD!

Gilmour is definitely Muff->Boost. I boost into my Muff as I prefer driving it rather than boosting signal.

Definetly place the boost after the muff. More definition. You can then shape the muff with the boost eq. I use a powerbooster set up as a treble boost. Don't overdo the gain. A little goes a long way.

i always boost after fuzz/distortion, it's a boost, as in you have something there already and then you push it, so you have the fuzz already there (first) then the boost it (after)

I only have a trebel booster and it's before everything. Make the muff cut out of a mix like a knife through butter. Not necessarily for Gilm tones though

Muff-> Boost= more attack, more definition, a little less compression= for me it wins

I agree with your comment about pedals in front of a Fuzz Face but I’ve seen more than one pic of Gilmour and his white coiy cable clearly going into the Power Boost and then from Power Boost to the Fuzz Face. Kinda confuses things.

I’m using a buffalo Fx-TDX after my rams head.
When setting the TD to boost after the big Muff how would you recommend setting it?
Low gain with higher volume on the TD?
Or do you match the volumes and increase the gain on the TD ? Thanks

“Distort the boost, don’t boost the distortion.” But I guess it’s subjective and depends on whether or not you’re trying to emulate a favourite artist and their bag of tricks?

Amazing, tony!! Well, I think I preferred it before the Muff. For me, sounded more like 2015-16 tour tone. By the way, I’m just about to buy my next pedal, but I’m choosing it... which is more important for David’s tone: MXR Dyna Comp or Blues Driver? I mean, yeah, totally different kind of pedals, but I already have a “tube screamer” like pedal and its sounding good for me now. But I think a Blues Driver it’s a must have (or BK tube drive, but so expensive here in Brazil). Any way, which pedal would you choose for now? MXR Dyna Comp or Boss BD2? (No, I don’t have any compressor).
