In an interview, Isayama stated that Historia is the only character he designed before outlining what her role in the story would be. Believing readers would want a "moe" character in the main cast, he designed Krista Lenz as a character whose only qualities were that she was cute and perfect. Because he did not design her with any thing other than surface-level qualities, he felt that she was a hollow character and was not satisfied with her until he made her emptiness a core aspect of her character growth
