Some communities in New Mexico refusing to evacuate after wildfires

As wildfire season revs up across the Southwest, two New Mexico counties have issued red flag warnings. The Calf Canyon and Hermits Peak fires have merged into a single massive blaze, spreading over 170,000 acres.

In Paradise, I have a friend, who refused to leave and He saved His home and the neighbors home, with garden hoses. They are the only 2 houses still standing, in the whole neighborhood.

I am an experienced wildland firefighter and was caught in the crosshairs of the Marshall Fire that burned down half the city of Louisville CO. If it gets bad and the wind changes the fires can jump the roads and leave y’all stranded. We tapped dry fire hydrants because the town’s water supply went to the internal sprinkler systems at the schools and hospitals leaving it very hard to access the water needed to put some of the fires out. Fire won’t burn what has already burned, so you will see them lighting fires to make a “containment” line around neighborhoods and homes. Please, if you must evacuate be ready to with the things you need like important documents, pictures, clothes, etc for at least 5 to 6 days. The wind gets tricky, with dry land and weather, anything can happen very quickly so please know what you are doing…body recovery was so hard for our search and rescue because the fire burned so fast and so hot it acted as a crematorium and it was just little bone here and there. BE CAREFUL!! Once the water supply is gone your sprinklers won’t work anymore and then you are screwed!! Prayers your guys way!! Thank you for being selfless and helping your community. U may need to boil your water before use if it gets real bad so heed warnings. If PD or FD tell you to go, then get your bags, your pets, and GO!!! 🤞 good luck! ❤️

As someone whom went through the wildfires in Washington State, this is truly devastating. I wish everyone safety, however, belongings and property are not as important as staying alive. Wildfires shift and change direction constantly, so I hope you all have a escape plan and a contingency plan in case your first plan can’t be carried out. God bless you all down there.
